Would you like to choose your flight seat mate using Facebook?

How much radiation are you exposed to on a plane?

airplanewing 4567

Radiation is all around you on an airplange.

Since the Fukushima nuclear disaster, you’ve probably heard me and other people talk about the radiation exposure we experience in everyday life. All humans, throughout history, have been exposed to background radiation produced constantly by the natural environment. Then there’s added exposures from modern sources: X-rays and medical scans, living near power plants (both coal and nuclear, and the coal is actually worse), and flying in airplanes…

Airbus “fantasy plane”

As soon as 2030, we might be flying in a new, more efficient aircraft with long, curled wings, a U-shaped tail, and a lightweight body — if manufacturer Airbus develops the “fantasy plane” it unveiled today at the Farnborough Airshow in the UK. The concept aircraft is more fuel efficient, boasts advanced interior systems, and, best of all, it’s quieter.

Why Can’t Planes Fly Near Volcanic Ash? A (Very) Brief Look At Engine Failure

Engine_f15_arp_750pix

Ash does not blast.

Nearly a week into the volcanic ash crisis plaguing swaths of Europe, passengers and airlines alike are starting to tire of the restricted airspace. The haunting cloud drifting thousands of feet above Earth’s surface is often invisible to the naked eye both at ground level and high into the reaches of the troposphere, causing many to wonder how this material could impact a flight. Could all of these microscopic particles of ash really be that big of problem?

Boeing 727 House

Not everyone opts for the conventional when building structures.  People have used unusual materials such as bottles, tires, and even trash to contruct their houses.  There are even vehicles that were formerly used as means of conveyance (e.g. buses, trains, trucks) that are now fashioned into unique dwellings.  Once they are stripped of seats and equpment they present ready-made, enclosed spaces (with windows) that are easily converted into rooms.

Recycled airplanes are being converted into homes, hotels, restaurants, etc.  Here is a collection of cool converted airplanes from around the world. (Pics)
