Drones could save lives in the Philippines – but why aren’t we using them?

There are three major ways that drones could be saving lives in the wake of the Philippines’ Typhoon Haiyan.

The first mainstream use of quadcopter drones has been to develop ways to end lives, unfortunately. Because, in natural disasters like Typhoon Haiyan, they could be invaluable for saving them.

Solar Bottle Bulb – a cheap and sustainable way to light homes

Illac Diaz, of non-profit My Shelter Foundation, brought the simple, cheap and innovative technology to the Philippines.

The slums in Manila are being transformed by a new twist on recycling.  Plastic bottles are now being viewed as a cheap and sustainable way to light homes instead of trash.

‘Laughing’ cicadas among 75 new species discovered

Experts say a new species of ‘laughing’ cicada abounds in the mountains of Batangas.

Laughing cicadas and small “cat sharks” are among scores of species believed new to science discovered by US and Filipino researchers in waters and islands of the Philippines, the team said Wednesday.
