Between the ages of 25 and 34, 41.3% percent of Americans will spend at least a year earning less than 150 percent of the poverty line.

In the world’s richest country, poverty is an astonishingly common experience. Almost 40 percent of American adults experience it for at least a year by age 60.  But poverty is especially common among young adults in America.

Does the NSA put U.S. elections at risk of manipulation?

During the last presidential election, did the Obama Administration ever spy on Mitt Romney? The question was raised by Alex Tabarrok at the popular economics blog Marginal Revolution and he acknowledges that it is provocative. Until recently, he would’ve regarded it as a “loony” question, he writes, and he doesn’t think that President Obama ordered the NSA to spy on Romney for political gain.

Global wind power capacity expected to skyrocket

Wind power could generate as much as 18 percent of global electricity by 2050.

Wind energy only accounts for a small percentage of global electricity production even though we have seen more wind farms popping up over the last few years. Wind power generates only 2.6 percent of the world’s electricity, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency, but that number is expected to grow significantly over the next few decades.

Airline coach seats are getting even worse

There’s a new low for the long-haul traveler. Airlines are ordering new Dreamliner 787s and Airbus A330s and are asking to have them fitted with 16.7″-wide coach seats. These are planes intended for intercontinental flights — six to 14 hours! — and they’re shaving the armrests, squeezing the seats, and otherwise cramming in passengers. The airlines say it’ll all be OK — they’ll just distract you from your terrible circumstances with big meals and TV.

Bike sales have outpaced car sales in almost every European country

Bicycle are outsold new-cars last year in every one of the European countries, except Belgium and Luxembourg. Car sales reached a low point earlier this year. Recent data shows car sales were recovering. The Millennial generation is more interested in bikes than in cars.

Starbucks connects fridges, coffee machines to the Internet of Things

The coffee machine knows you probably don’t want whipped cream on your venti non-fat latte.

Starbucks refrigerators and coffeemakers are about to get a whole lot smarter.  Starbucks reportedly plans to connect its devices to the Internet of Things within the next year. Fridges will now tell employees when a carton of milk has gone bad, and cloud-based Clover coffeemakers will track what recipes customers prefer, and alert workers to the machine’s performance. The move is an attempt to improve productivity as well as customer service.

This year, in South Korea mobile gaming is expected to generate $1.4 billion.  Mobile games like Anipang have become a cultural phenomenon within the country. It’s as common to see older women in their sixties playing games in the subway as it is to see younger children playing games at the bus stop.
