Facebook competes with Twitter in the budding social media analytics market with their trove of user data. In a report produced in conjunction with SecondSync, a social media television analytics firm, Facebook breaks down anonymized user data surrounding television shows by a variety of measures such as types of interaction, demographics, device and genre.

Top 10 trends at CES: Venture Beat

Curved displays by Sony at CES 2014.

Venture Beat tried to cover all of the 2 million square feet of exhibit space at the 2014 International CES.  They saw only a portion of the tens of thousands products on display at the huge tech trade show. They saw fads like 3D glasses for TVs fade away. And it was interesting to see how “phablets,” or phones with huge, tablet-like screens, have caught on in places like Asia even though we’ve ridiculed them in the past.

Favorite technologies and online behavior of teenagers has a way of predicting the entire country’s favorite technologies and online behavior. From Facebook, to mobile-phone addiction and Snapchat, the habits we dismissed yesterday as silly and childish have a way of going national.

Nielsen-Twitter TV ratings report shows 38% increase in tweets about TV

Tweeting about TV is a large and growing phenomenon.

The first Nielsen-Twitter TV ratings report has just been released by Nielsen, showing that there has been a 38 percent increase in tweets about TV in the US over the last year — from 190 million in Q2 2012 to 263 million in Q2 2013. The number of Twitter TV authors in the US has also risen 24 percent, from 15 million to 19 million in the same period. (Infographic)

Another 1.8 million people drop their cable TV subscriptions this year

The numbers of people who pay for any type of TV service are in decline.

There’s another dismal set of numbers for the TV business from Q2 2013. About 1.8 million people ended their cable TV subscriptions during the second quarter, according to analysts at SNL Kagan.

Researchers develop short-range wireless communication between battery-free devices

Engineers at the University of Washington have developed a new “ambient backscatter” wireless communication scheme that allows two devices to communicate with each other by reflecting ambient TV and cellular transmissions — batteries not required.
