Cota charging system transmits power wirelessly at up to 30 feet

Gartner Research released a report in 2008 in which it identified the number one IT grand challenge as “Never having to manually recharge devices.” Physicist Hatem Zeine has invented what he believes to be the answer to this challenge. The Cota wireless power transmission system uses intelligently steered phased array antennas to focus a beam of microwaves on a receiver module – and only on that module. The inherently safe technology can deliver electrical power up to 30 feet from a central transmitter without any line-of-sight requirement and without interfering with other devices. The system is projected to hit the market in 2015.

20% of adults in the U.S. don’t use the internet

Around 20% of American adults who do not use the Internet at home, work and school, or by mobile device.

There has been a $7 billion effort by the Obama administration to increase internet access throughout the country. Perhaps most staggering, though, is that almost 20 percent of American adults still don’t use the internet at home, work, school, or through a mobile device — a statistic that has generally remained the same since 2009.

Researchers develop short-range wireless communication between battery-free devices

Engineers at the University of Washington have developed a new “ambient backscatter” wireless communication scheme that allows two devices to communicate with each other by reflecting ambient TV and cellular transmissions — batteries not required.

OLEV bus charged wirelessly by the road

The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) has developed an Online Electric Vehicle (OLEV) bus that receives power wirelessly from electrical cables laid underneath the surface of the street using Shaped Magnetic Field in Resonance (SMFIR) technology. Two of the new buses have just hit the streets in the city of Gumi, South Korea. (Video)

Wireless carriers see double-digit increase in surveillance requests

Cell companies have seen double-digit percentage increases in law-enforcement requests for subscriber information for each the past five years.

Cell phone carriers say they received 1.3 million requests last year from law enforcement agencies for subscriber text messages, caller locations, and other information, reflecting a steady increase during the past five years.

Sony’s Authentication Power Outlet can recognize devices and users

Sony’s Authenticated Power Outlet system currently consists of a plug and outlet that communicate wirelessly.

A power outlet that can identify devices plugged into it, as well as individuals using the plug has been developed by Sony. The company says such technology could allow the electricity usage of individual devices to be monitored so non-essential devices could be switched off remotely in the event of limited electricity supply, or for the billing of customers charging their electric vehicles or mobile devices in public places.
