There’s no such thing as a quiet year for gaming, and 2014 has certainly been a noisy one. It’s been a year very much focused on the PS4 and Xbox One finding their feet, but the two titans haven’t totally hogged the limelight. We’ve seen virtual reality continue to burgeon, we’ve witnessed free-to-play open up some interesting discussions about in-app payments, and we played Rambo: The Video Game. The less said about that last one, the better.
Video Games… A form of exercise
Children burn more than four times as many calories per minute playing an active video game than playing a seated game, and their heart rate is also significantly higher with the active game, according to a report in the September issue of Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
In 2005, Microsoft made a “Jump In” ad for their Xbox 360 console that never aired. The ad, deemed too controversial, showed commuters on a subway platform playing “shoot ‘em up” with their fingers (Bang!).
