Cracked Cathodes Could Speed Up Electric Vehicle Charging, Defying Conventional Wisdom

In a surprising revelation that challenges prevailing assumptions, researchers have uncovered a counterintuitive phenomenon in electric vehicle (EV) batteries – cracks in the cathodes may actually enhance charging speeds. This discovery challenges the approach of many EV manufacturers who aim to minimize cracks in batteries to extend their lifespan.

Yiyang Li, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the University of Michigan and the corresponding author of the study published in the journal Energy and Environmental Sciences, explains, “Many companies are interested in making ‘million-mile’ batteries using particles that do not crack. Unfortunately, if the cracks are removed, the battery particles won’t be able to charge quickly without the extra surface area from those cracks.”

Expanding EV Capabilities: General Motors Brings Vehicle-to-Home Power to More Models

Electric vehicles (EVs) are known for their battery cells that power the car’s motors, propelling it forward. However, with the right equipment, these battery systems can have an additional function beyond just powering the vehicle – they can also provide energy to homes during blackouts.

General Motors (GM) recently announced an expansion of its EV lineup’s capabilities in this regard. While initially limited to the Silverado EV RST pickup, GM has now revealed that other EVs in its portfolio, such as the Chevy Equinox, Chevy Blazer, and Cadillac Lyriq, will also be equipped to supply power to homes. This advancement is set to be integrated into GM’s retail lineup of Ultium-based electric vehicles by the model year 2026.

Embracing Percolation: Rekindling Creativity and Unlocking Ideas

In the nascent stages of my career, a trusty Moleskine notebook became my constant companion, capturing a tapestry of ideas ranging from innovative products to captivating stories. Snippets of overheard conversations during commutes found refuge within its pages, snippets of potential fuel for future creativity. I meticulously transcribed quotes from books and films, meticulously crafting my vision of an “Ideal Day.” The purpose? It was irrelevant. My goal was simple: capture every drop of inspiration through a self-made pact.

Does this sound familiar? Each of us encounters periods of heightened creativity and idea generation. Sometimes, these surges are triggered by deadlines, significant events, or even moments of anxiety. Perhaps the looming sale of your company sparks a flurry of inspiration. Your once-secure job may suddenly appear vulnerable, inducing both frustration and fear. Yet, amidst these emotions, a spark is ignited. You find yourself reaching out to connections, reevaluating your experience, and revamping your resume. A cascade of opportunities materializes, new avenues unfurl, and a palpable shift occurs. Even if the sale doesn’t transpire, your energy is renewed by the prospect of new horizons.

Artists Challenge AI in High-Stakes Legal Battle Over Creative Ownership

Artists have been engaged in a steadfast campaign against artificial intelligence (AI) technology, contending that it diminishes their artistic work and jeopardizes their livelihoods. This clash between creativity and AI has ignited a debate centered on ethical concerns, as artists grapple with the reproduction of their styles by machine learning algorithms. However, the legal battleground remains uncharted, with AI companies continuing their operations despite artist objections.

While some initial legal rulings have surfaced, including the determination that entirely AI-generated creations cannot be copyrighted, the broader question of the legality surrounding AI platforms trained on human art without compensation or credit remains unresolved. This legal gray area has led to a significant class-action lawsuit filed in California, highlighting the contentious relationship between AI, artists, and copyright law.

Enhancing Online Shopping Transparency: Visual Information Improves Understanding of Terms and Conditions, Study Finds

Consumers Call for Improved Transparency in Online Purchases

Experts are urging for increased visual accessibility to terms and conditions when making online purchases, a move that could revolutionize consumer understanding and memory, according to a recent study published in the Journal of Consumer Policy. The research highlights the potential of providing clearer information post-purchase, leading to a deeper engagement with legalities and improving overall comprehension.

Post-Purchase Information Boosts Engagement

The study reveals a significant disparity in the attention and interest shown towards pre-purchase and post-purchase disclosures. Pre-purchase reading times were found to be only half as long as post-purchase reading times, indicating a lack of focus on disclosures before making a purchase. Researchers suggest that shifting the responsibility for providing detailed information to companies after a purchase could be a game-changer, with attention levels increasing by as much as 162% and understanding improving by 14 to 21%.

False Matches and Injustice: Facial Recognition Software’s Troubling Impact

Facial Recognition Software: A History of Inaccuracy and Injustice

The history of facial recognition programs has been marred by a troubling pattern of false matches, particularly when it comes to nonwhite populations. A recent distressing case shines a light on the inherent flaws of this technology. The New York Times reported a harrowing incident involving Porcha Woodruff, a visibly pregnant woman who was wrongfully arrested and detained for over 11 hours by the Detroit Police Department due to a robbery and carjacking she had no involvement in.

Injustice Unveiled: The Woodruff Case

The incident unfolded on February 16, leading to Woodruff’s subsequent arrest. Despite her evident pregnancy and strong claims that she could not have physically committed the alleged crimes, six police officers handcuffed her in front of her children and neighbors. Notably, the surveillance footage of the January 29 robbery clearly showed a non-pregnant woman. Woodruff’s ordeal extended beyond her arrest, as she reportedly suffered contractions and back spasms while in custody, requiring intravenous fluids at a local hospital due to dehydration. She was released on a $100,000 personal bond later that night, and her charges were eventually dismissed due to insufficient evidence.
