Researchers develop self-cooling windows

Self-cooling windows let in the sunshine without the heat.

Homeowners love a lot of windows in their homes that let in a lot of sunlight.  But those windows can also mean higher air conditioning bills since they absorb heat but don’t tend to cool themselves, until now. Harvard researchers have created self-cooling windows.

The Kite patch makes you invisible to mosquitoes

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/70493319[/vimeo]

Everyone hates mosquitoes, and the market is flooded with products aimed at getting you rid of the nuisance. A new product, the Kite patch claims to contain natural ingredients that, when worn, make you undetectable to the insects for 48 hours. Better yet, it doesn’t have to be worn on the skin, but will work just fine on clothing. We’re not sure what’s in it, but if it works as advertised, it should become an instant hit. Currently doing the crowdfunding dance on IndieGogo, the plan is for the makers to test the first batch in Uganda, where malaria is common. Once that’s done, and once they’ve received US EPA approval, Kite will become available stateside.

3D printed Barbie doll redesigned to look like a real 19-year-old girl

How old is Barbie?  Not in how many years she has existed but how old is she? She is a close to a 19-year-old girl, right? Everyone knows that a Barbie doll doesn’t look like a real person, but what you might not know is that in order for her proportions to be real; she would have to be an alien or some sort of half-human.  Diane Adams wrote about this a few months ago in her article,  Typical Barbie Body vs. Typical Real Woman Body. Introducing the Virtual Battery

Phil Watts conducting an experiment

Working day and night in his backyard workshop, energy pioneer Phil Watts has developed a significant number of breakthrough power technologies, but none quite as significant as the “virtual battery.”

The Virtual Battery Hybrid is an aggregation of 4 technologies; Thermoelectric power generation, solar thermal, ground loops and Nanofluid heat transfer fluid. This technology is currently part of the Colorado Innovation Challenge where people can vote on their favorite energy technology.

AlgaeBulb lights up with green algae

Algaebulb

Designer Gyula Bodonyi has harnessed the power of green algae in a light bulb. Algae projects have already been seen powering power entire buildings, but Bodonyi’s concept brings green power to the public on a more user-friendly scale. With the Algaebulb, algae powers a single LED activated by a tiny air pump and hydrophobic material able to create a teeny-tiny power house for light. (photos)
