When you hear the name Bluetooth, it brings back bad memories of the wireless cell phone earpiece that was more personal statement than practical tool.   But Bluetooth has come of age. It has become the muse of several start-ups and established companies that are finding new and creative ways to take advantage of Bluetooth’s drastic uptick in efficiency, from the Nike Fuelband to the Pebble Smartwatch, which we previously featured on “This Could Be Big.”

A chip that can turn body heat into electric energy

 Body-powered devices eliminate the toxic waste generated by the heavy metals used in the billions of batteries we currently use each year.

A startup in Corvallis, Oregon, has developed a small chip that can turn body heat into electric energy. The chip absorbs heat directly from the skin and then channels energy through a thermoelectric generator that converts it into electric power. In the  future, the chip will enable us to power and recharge our handheld and wearable electronic devices with our own bodies.

Lego Mindstorms EV3 is Lego’s first major update of the Mindstorms line since 2006.  Mindstorms are Lego’s programmable robotic parts–a brain, motors, and sensors–that interface with their Technic line.  And since social networks, smartphones and apps all rule today it’s only natural that each of these ideas worked themselves into the Lego Mindstorm EV3.

Chef’s Farm – a vending machine that grows 20,000 heads of lettuce a year without sunlight

After a nuclear holocaust has blocked out the sun or rampaging zombies have taken over our farmland there is finally a device that will guarantee we can still grow vegetables in the dark. This Japanese lettuce-growing vending machinet doesn’t require sunlight (it uses fluorescent bulbs) and it can churn out a surprising yield of  lettuce: 60 heads a day, or over 20,000 a year.
