In 2012, Facebook’s data center energy use grew 33 percent, as the company installed tens of thousands of servers in its new company-built data centers. The growth of the company’s power usage is disclosed in the company’s latest sustainability report, which also documents the company’s move to reduce its computing footprint in Silicon Valley, even as it boosts its reliance on leased space in northern Virginia.

Which industries get the most customer service complaints?

Only 44% of the top 25 online retailers responded to customer service requests from social media within 24 hours.

Social media and the internet have made it much easier for people to vent about bad service to a potentially large audience. If you make a customer unhappy these days you can count on their other 5,000-some friends hearing about it, too.  Twenty-five percent of people who have a negative customer experience share their thoughts on social networks. Why 3D printing is set to explode in 2014

Top digital priorities for retail are site conversion and mobile: Study

There are more effective and efficient digital tactics to invest in than social media.

A Forrester Research and shop.org study done recently reveals that site conversion and mobile are a far higher priority for retailers than social media for 2013. The reason for this is both orthodox and unconventional: the data supports these tactics.

Will the library of the future have books?

Some libraries around the world are changing.

While most of the 100,000+ libraries in the U.S. will likely continue to function as they always have, moving books around shelves and holding areas, to and from patrons — at least for the foreseeable future — some libraries around the world are changing and this could be the start of a trend.

Community colleges go open source to seek fix for remediation

One of the thorniest problems facing higher education is remedial education.  Some community colleges have found a way to dial-up free online courses to help tackle the problem.  The two-year colleges aren’t offering massive open online courses as substitutes for their offerings, however, or for the instructors who teach them.

Adding more artificial intelligence to online learning could make it faster and more fun

More artificial intelligence will make online learning faster and fun.

Udacity has evolved the MOOC (massive open online courses) concept into one that really helps people throughout the course; to complete the course. The most recent completion rates in pilots we’ve been running have been 85 percent, as opposed to 5 percent or 4 percent, which is common in MOOC-land.

Funeral costs have increased a staggering 827 percent in the last 50 years.

Une Belle Vie has released this helpful infographic on the true cost of death. The infographic illustrates how much funerals, memorials, cremations and other death care options costs have risen from 1960 to 2010.
