At one school students can finish high school with bachelor’s degree

 

BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) — Aya Tal-mason’s excitement as she describes her research on cancer-fighting drugs rivals her schoolmate Paige Fries’ audible enthusiasm about her recently published science-fiction novel. Fellow student Hannah Herbst recently visited President Barack Obama to explain the inexpensive generator she designed that uses plastic spoons and the hydropower of streams to charge cellphones, giving remote villagers a link to the outside world.

An “A.I. teacherless” world is how we beat the jobs doomsday clock

His quote has been following him around the globe. “A staggering 2 billion jobs will be lost to technological advancement by 2030.”

The author is a tall Colorado author whom looks the part of seer – and maybe trumpet player for a jazz band. It’s the beard he’s worn for years. He has been known to pose for photos dressed in a renaissance period costume. People are unlikely to forget Futurist Thomas Frey and the stir he has caused, though he is not the only one who says many jobs will be lost.

Driverless cars could save the UK around £14.3 billion annually

It goes without saying that preservation of life is the reason to invest in road and car safety technology, but the financial implications which fatal and non-fatal accidents have on the economy are another factor which cannot be ignored.

According to Reported Road Casualties Great Britain Annual Report 2014 the total cost of prevention of reported road accidents in 2014 was estimated to be £16.3 billion – this includes an estimate of the cost of damage only accidents but does not allow for unreported injury accidents.

The three biggest problems facing AI today

Speaking to attendees at a deep learning conference in London last month, there was one particularly noteworthy recurring theme: humility, or at least, the need for it.

While companies like Google are confidently pronouncing that we live in an “AI-first age,” with machine learning breaking new ground in areas like speech and image recognition, those at the front lines of AI research are keen to point out that there’s still a lot of work to be done. Just because we have digital assistants that sound like the talking computers in movies doesn’t mean we’re much closer to creating true artificial intelligence.

Westworld-style sex with robots: When will it happen – and is it really a good idea?

 

Would you have sex with a robot? An impromptu poll of colleagues and friends drew answers ranging from “yes, but only if it was a fully sentient, consenting robot” to “yes, but only if it wasn’t a sentient robot” to “yes, if I could program it and specify exactly what I wanted…no unexpected exploratory penetration, please”. (We’ve paraphrased that last one a little.)

Hydrogen may be winning the zero-emissions battle.

In 2016, those who still say battery-electric vehicles don’t have a future probably haven’t spent much time in California. The California Air Resources Board (CARB)’s policies, which predate those of the federal government, treat the internal-combustion engine as a chronic offender that is beyond hope for reform. For 26 years, the state has been keeping the faith in a single solution: zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs), a category that includes both hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles and battery-electric vehicles.

Cash is on the verge of extinction in these countries

My dad, a former Wall Street trader always advised me “cash is king” and to “hold on to it” when the economy gets tough.

But in the Netherlands, cash is definitely not getting the royal treatment. In so many places, it has simply ceased to be recognised as legal tender. More and more Dutch stores, from upscale health-food store Marqt to my local baker and bagel shop, take pin — or debit — cards exclusively. Some retailers even describe going cash-free as “cleaner” or “safer”.

Spaceflight startup Ripple Aerospace want to launch rockets from the ocean

In the constant search for low-cost spaceflight, Norwegian startup Ripple Aerospace has come up with a unique solution: How about we just get rid of, like, the land? Their plan calls for reusable cargo rockets to be built in shipyards, transported to open ocean, and launched from the sea, without so much as a floating launch pad to get in the way of the rocket’s journey from ocean to space.
