Why Was Google Collecting the Last Four Digits of Kids’ Social Security Numbers for an Art Contest?

Google could easily have guessed the remainder of the numbers from the other information they collected.

Google asked parents to enter the last four digits of their children’s Social Security Numbers, as well as their city of birth and age, as a condition to enter a Google-sponsored art contest.

World Beer Cup Winners Announced

Brewers from six continents earned awards from an elite international panel of judges this week in the 2010 Brewers Association World Beer Cup – the world’s largest-ever commercial beer competition. The eighth bi-annual competition announced awards to brewers from 19 countries ranging from Australia and Italy to Iceland and Japan.

This year, 642 breweries from 44 countries and 47 U.S. states vied for awards with 3,330 beers entered in 90 beer style categories…

The study of visual illusions is therefore of critical importance to the understanding of the basic mechanisms of sensory perception, as well as to cure many diseases of the visual system.

Sadly, even competitors in pie-eating competitions have resorted to such nefarious cheating. But officials at the upcoming World Pie Eating Championships in Wigan, UK have taken steps to keep athletes honest:

Steve Elliott is the first homeowner to volunteer to participate in DaVinci Quest’s proposed Smarter, Safer, Greener House contest

It’s a new concept.  It’s a big contest.  And it could be a tough sell.

But Karl Dakin, CEO of DaVinci Quest, hopes he can get the Longmont City Council on board with his company’s plans to launch a contest in Longmont that would drive innovation — and, eventually, economic development — in the green-building industry.
