Twin Attack Helicopter

American aerospace manufacturer MD Helicopters just announced details of its upcoming MD 969 Twin Attack Helicopter at a military trade show in Nashville, Tennessee.

In the rear of the fuselage of the helicopter, The Drive reports, a munitions guiding system pops out to deploy seven payloads ranging from powered missiles to small drones that could carry out their own missions independently from the copter.

This Is Flight in the World of Tomorrow

Vision of the Future

A sleek new helicopter design was unveiled by Bell Helicopter at the Heli-Expo in Dallas, Texas.

Called the FCX-001, the next-generation machine will be built from sustainable materials and run on a hybrid power system. It will come equipped with augmented reality (AR), an artificial intelligence (AI) co-pilot, and rotor blades that morph depending on flight conditions.

Krossblade SkyCruiser

A new flying car, the Krossblade SkyCruiser, is not like any other flying car.  While folding wings are pretty common among these car/plane prototypes, the SkyCruiser has a Transformer-like power to reconfigure itself in mid-air. (Video)

The AT Black Knight Transformer roadable VTOL aircraft

AT Black Knight Transformer

Hearing about flying cars conjure up images of a sporty little number that takes to the air like something out of the Jetsons. But what about one that’s a cross between a 4×4, an octocopter, and a Blackhawk helicopter? That’s what Advanced Tactics of El Segundo, California is seeing with its ambitions to produce a roadable VTOL aircraft capable of unmanned autonomous operations as a more flexible way to recover casualties, move supplies, and support special forces. Volocopter VC200 – 18-rotor electric helicopter takes flight

Volocopter VC200

Greener transportation options have become a priority in the modern world. Greener and more efficient vehicles of all types are eventually becoming the standard. Even helicopters are becoming greener. One German company, E-volo, designed several electric helicopters, and one of its models, the Volocopter VC200, recently passed its first flight tests. Academic and industry researchers have been working  for decades on control algorithms for autonomous helicopters — robotic helicopters that pilot themselves, rather than requiring remote human guidance. Dozens of research teams have competed in a series of autonomous-helicopter challenges posed by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI); progress has been so rapid that the last two challenges have involved indoor navigation without the use of GPS.

Medical helicopter increases odds of survival for trauma victims: Study

Medical helicopter

Medical helicopter beats ambulance for trauma victims.

For the critically injured, there are two choices for getting to a hospital – ground ambulance or helicopter.   While many critics decry the use of helicopters for emergency transportation because of cost and potential crashes, it turns out a trip to the ER via the sky may actually improve a person’s chances for survival.

NASA’s Subsonic Rotary Wing Project – Helicopter With External Airbags

nasa-heli-airbag-20091210-600

Airbags have evolved from being in cars to on cars, so it’s only natural that airbags in aircraft should be making the trip outside. NASA’s Subsonic Rotary Wing Project is attempting to make autorotation landings a little bit softer by slapping a pair of expandable kevlar cushions between the skids, and the first test was a success.
