A Glimpse Into the Future – IBM Releases It’s ‘Next Five in Five’


Air-powered batteries, 3-D cellphones that project holographs and personalized commutes are among the predictions of IBM scientists gazing into their crystal balls.  The US computer giant this week released its annual “Next Five in Five” list of five innovations expected over the next five years.

Dr. NakaMats: The World’s Greatest Inventor Holds Over 3,000 Patents

Japan’s leading entrepreneur and world’s greatest inventor, Yoshiro Nakamatsu, otherwise known as Dr. NakaMats, has amassed 3,357 patents during his long career. (Thomas Edison? A piker. He had only 1,093 to his credit.).  At age 82 he says he’s only halfway to his goal of dreaming up 6,000 innovations, which, according to his research, should be at age 144.  (Video)

IBM’s Traffic Lights Can Stop Car Engines


IBM developing a system to control your vehicle engine.

Thinking about zipping through that red light? Well, you won’t physically be able to if IBM has anything to say about it. The technology giant’s recent patent application for  “A System and Method for Controlling Vehicle Engine Running State at Busy Intersections for Increased Fuel Consumption Efficiency” prevents cars from running red lights by–get this–remotely stopping vehicle engines.

Smart Water Grid Technologies To Be A $16.3 Billion Industry

Electricity gets all the attention when it comes to the smart grid, but not to be ignored is also what a smart grid can do for water consumption. Americans consume twice the world average in water, massive amounts are wasted in households, manufacturing, agriculture, and landscaping – massive amounts that could be conserved through proper monitoring and accounting. Luckily, water footprints are getting increased attention, and a water grid is being zeroed in on by businesses such as IBM who is working on boosting technology behind everything from high tech water pollution sensing to water footprint accounting. . In fact, the water grid could be the next big business concept, set to be a $16.3 billion dollar industry in the next 10 years.

The detailed chemical structure of a single molecule has been imaged for the first time, say researchers.  The physical shape of single carbon nanotubes has been outlined before, using similar techniques – but the new method even shows up chemical bonds.

Amsterdam Beginning Work on a Smart Grid


First a Pilot Project with 500 Homes
“Smart grid” is the new big thing in the world of green, and despite some fuzziness on the definition of what a smart grid actually is, an update to our energy grid to make it “smarter” and more efficient is definitely overdue. The city of Amsterdam is the latest to join the party with a new pilot program that will be managed by IBM and Cisco, along with the Dutch utility Nuon. 500 homes will be outfitted with energy management systems, including smart meters and energy monitors.
