Ban on the incandescent light bulb would save consumers $12.5 billion by 2020

The average household’s energy costs would be cut by 7% or $85 every year.

Making it’s way through the U.S. Congress is a bill that would block certain provisions from a 2007 energy law signed by George W. Bush that “effectively bans the 100-watt incandescent bulb next year and other versions subsequently”. The law simply mandates that bulbs need to be 30% more energy efficient, an improvement that could have great economic and environmental benefits.

LED Traffic Lights Causing More Accidents

Photo of snow covered LED traffic lights was taken after a fatal crash in Oswego, Ill. on April 6

Cities around the country that have installed energy-efficient traffic lights are discovering a hazardous downside: The bulbs don’t burn hot enough to melt snow and can become crusted over in a storm — a problem blamed for dozens of accidents and at least one death.

Future of Light Bulbs May Be ESL’s

 vu1esl

Vu1’s conceptual design for its R-30 bulb.

While compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are currently the primary alternative to incandescent light bulbs, a company from Seattle predicts that its own novel light bulbs will eventually replace CFLs and LEDs. Vu1 (“view one”) Corporation has been working on its electron stimulated luminescence (ESL) bulbs, and has recently released a demo video (below).

Laser Makes Regular Lightbulbs Super-Efficient

Laser Makes Regular Lightbulbs Super-Efficient

Everything is Better with Lasers

What if you could take a regular incandescent lightbulb, zap it with a powerful laser for a small fraction of a second, and make it about twice as efficient as a regular lightbulb? That seems to be what researchers at the University of Rochester did. What does the laser do? It creates an “array of nano- and micro-scale structures on the surface of [the] regular tungsten filament-the tiny wire inside a light bulb-and these structures make the tungsten become far more effective at radiating light.”

Wireless LED Speaker Lightbulb

Wireless LED Speaker Light

Surround sound is pretty awesome, but it’s rarely easy to set up, what with the wires and the other wires and the connectors and all that crap… Not to mention having ugly-ass speakers sitting all around your living room, and if you’re doing it properly, bolted to the ceiling. The SoundBulb is a combination lightbulb and wireless speaker system designed to solve all of these problems by letting you stick everything up in the ceiling and inside lamps.

General Electric’s new Energy Smart CFL.fluorescent light is one of those things that makes you scratch your head and wonder: How the hell do they do that? A fluorescent spiral lamp into a traditional bulb?
