While modern technology has benefited most of us by turning the things we consume from physical object into pixels on a screen, those with sight difficulties don’t get along well with visual stimuli or touchscreen devices. We have seen Yahoo! Japan develop Hands On Search, a project that lets blind kids carry out web searches with 3D printed results. Now the country’s governmental department GSI is creating software that will enable those with visual impairments to print out 3D versions of online maps.

Gravity map exposes mysteries of the deep oceans

The gravity model of the North Atlantic ocean basin reveals tectonic history in sharp detail.

It’s like someone pulled a plug in the oceans and drained them away as a sea-floor map has exposed thousands of never-before-seen underwater mountains and ridges. The map was generated by the highest-resolution gravity model ever made for the oceans and will guide deep-sea research for years to come. (Video)

Darker shades of blue reflect those at the richest end of the wealth spectrum, while darker shades of red reflect those at the lower end. As you can see in the map, there’s a wide gulf between the fortunes of America’s richest.

The map above shows the largest company by revenue in every state in the U.S.  The map drew information from Hoover’s, a Dun & Bradstreet company,  database of company profiles. It was created by Mike Simmons in collaboration with Broadview Networks. The site updates information based on figures available from the most recent fiscal year.

Map reveals how the entire world could be connected using a global underground network

Web developer Chris Gray came up with his idea for a global Underground map when he was visiting Australia.

What if you could board a train in Madras, India and travel to Boston without changing trains? One man has imagined the world as a giant London Underground map where people can travel freely between countries and traverse vast bodies of water from the comfort of their seat while vehicles speed through vast tunnels.
