Now for something completely out of this world.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has officially announced, this week, it plans to send humans to the red planet – in a future manned mission that will see humans first attempt to land on the surface of an asteroid, and if successful, the later goal being to put those human astronauts on the actual surface of Mars.

“NASA is developing the capabilities needed to send humans to an asteroid by 2025 and Mars in the 2030s,” the press release issued by the U.S government-funded space organization read.

Latest thinking about terraforming Mars, introducing cyanobacteria

3 Terraforming Mars 1

Terraforming Mars

While scientists believe that at one time, long ago, Mars had an atmosphere similar to Earth’s and was covered with flowing water, the reality today is quite different. In fact, the surface of Mars is so hostile that a vacation in Antarctica would seem pleasant by comparison.

In addition to the extreme cold, there is little atmosphere to speak of and virtually no oxygen. However, a team of students from Germany wants to change that. Their plan is to introduce cyanobacteria into the atmosphere which would convert the ample supplies of CO² into oxygen gas, thus paving the way for possible settlements.

3D printed Mars homes could be built in 24 hours

The Contour Crafter could 3D print housing on the surface of the Moon using concrete made from lunar rock.

Imagine it’s the year 2045, and you open the curtains in the morning and instead of grey skies and rain, you are looking out at a rust-colored rocky panorama. You have just woken up on Mars.

NASA reveals spacesuit of the future

space suit 1

Z-series spacesuit

Style in spacesuits tends to advance at a slow pace. The spacesuit that is being currently worn by astronauts has been in use since 1982. But NASA has designed the Z-series suit that is designed for walking on Mars, not just floating around in space as astronauts have in the past. And NASA wants you to help pick the final look. Musk hopes for flights to Mars to be available through his private space travel company at a cost of around $500,000 per person.

The billionaire founder and CEO of the private spaceflight company SpaceX, Elon Must, wants to help establish a Mars colony of up to 80,000 people by ferrying explorers to the Red Planet for perhaps $500,000 a trip.

NASA plans to make water and oxygen on the surface of the Moon and Mars by 2020

NASA is taking steps that could lead to colonization of other planets.

NASA is working on plans to make water, oxygen, and hydrogen on the surface of the Moon and Mars. It is vital that we find a way of extracting these vital gases and liquids from moons and planets if we ever want to colonize other planets, rather than transporting them from Earth (which is prohibitively expensive, due to Earth’s gravity). The current plan is to land a rover on the Moon in 2018 that will try to extract hydrogen, water, and oxygen — and then hopefully, Curiosity’s successor will try to convert the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere into oxygen in 2020 when it lands on Mars.

Buzz Aldrin wants a manned mission to Mars within 25 years

Buzz Aldrin was the second person to walk on the Moon in 1969.

When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin first set foot on the surface of the Moon on July 20, 1969, it appeared as though mankind was on the verge of a new age of space exploration. After all, if the moon could be conquered, what could prevent us traveling to other planets, even to other solar systems?

Mars One to begin accepting applications in July for 2023 mission

An artist’s rendition of a Mars One colony.

Martian colonization non-profit, Mars One, will begin accepting applications in July from people who want to colonize Mars, Space.com reports. The applications must be in video form and applicants have to pay a fee (the company told Space.com that it was to weed out insincere candidates).
