Star Wars-like planet orbiting two suns discovered

planets

The planet named Kepler-16b, will have an extraordinary double sunset at the end of each day.

Astronomers discover a real-life Tatooine. A spectacle made popular by the “Star Wars” saga — a planet with two suns — has now been confirmed in space for the first time, astronomers revealed.

Melting ice at the North and South Poles is adding to the Earth’s girth

earth

The Earth had been ‘slimming down’ by just under a millimetre a year following the Ice Age, but global warming is reversing this process.

Is global warming to blame for the Earth putting on ‘weight’ around its ‘midriff’?  According to scientists, melting ice in Antarctica and Greenland due to global warming is adding volume to the oceans and this extra water is being pulled towards the Equator, adding to the girth at the widest part of our planet.

China breaks ground on world’s largest radio telescope

FAST

3D model of FAST

Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory has the world’s largest radio telescope but not for long.  China has broken ground on the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), a massive bowl-shaped radio signal collector that will be the world’s most sensitive when it opens for business in 2016.

First Potentially Habitable Exoplanet Found

planet

Gliese 581 and its exoplanets are only 20 light years away.

One of our own solar system’s closest neighboring stars and a regular point of exoplanetary interest, the red dwarf Gliese 581, can finally claim the title of owning the first confirmed potentially-habitable expolanet. French researchers running complex computer models have demonstrated that the planet Gliese 581d–once thought too cold to sustain life–indeed could possess the proper ingredients to sustain liquid water and an atmosphere.

Researchers propose new planet “Tyche” on distant fringe of solar system.

If you grew up thinking there were nine planets and were shocked when Pluto was demoted five years ago, get ready for another surprise. There may be nine after all, and Jupiter may not be the largest.

Living Earth Simulator – Predicting the Future of Everything

disease

The Living Earth Simulator aims to predict how diseases spread.

It could be one of the most ambitious computer projects ever conceived.  An international group of scientists are aiming to create a simulator that can replicate everything happening on Earth – from global weather patterns and the spread of diseases to international financial transactions or congestion on Milton Keynes’ roads.
