People are shifting from the TV screen to smaller tablet screens for streaming video.
There has been a dramatic increase over the last six months in the amount of streaming video content veiwed on tablet devices, according to a report released by Ooyala’s Q3 Global Video Index. (Infographic)
Ooyala is a video analytics startup that measures anonymized viewing habits of about 200 million unique viewers in more than 130 countries. Its latest quarterly report details how people are shifting from the TV screen to smaller tablet screens.
The boost isn’t that surprising considering the number of affordable tablets that have hit retail shelves over the last three months alone. Some of those include Google’s recently refreshed line of Nexus tablets, Amazon’s new Kindle HD, and Barnes & Noble’s Nook HD, and of course the newly launched iPad mini.
Below is a breakdown of some of the other interesting stats from the report as well as an infographic of the data from Ooyala.
- Tablet owners spent 71% of their total tablet video viewing time watching videos 10 minutes or longer.
- 30% of total tablet viewing time was spent watching content over an hour long.
- The overall share of tablet video viewing grew 90% in the past two quarters.
- The amount of time users spent watching live video on gaming consoles more than doubled in Q3.
- Desktop viewers tuned into live video for an average of 40 minutes.
