AI makes visible what was always true but impossible to quantify at scale: overhead ratios don’t predict impact, emotional appeals don’t indicate effectiveness, celebrity involvement doesn’t ensure accountability, and restricted donations don’t guarantee funds reach intended purposes.

We can do better. Rigorous impact evaluation, evidence-based funding, proper governance, and transparent reporting can dramatically increase social impact without increasing donations. The choice isn’t between supporting charities and abandoning causes—it’s between funding based on compelling narratives and funding based on demonstrated effectiveness.

The age of nonprofit accountability avoidance is ending. What replaces it will depend on whether the sector embraces transparency and impact measurement, or whether donors and regulators force change by redirecting funding to evidence-based approaches. Either way, the overhead fiction and other dysfunctions are now visible. And once visible, they become indefensible.
