Do states with no income tax save residents money?

no state taxes

A state might have no income tax, but it might make up for that through other taxes.

If you’re thinking about moving to a new location, it’s reasonable to seek out spots that might cost you less. Thus many people turn to states with no income tax. However, there’s more to the picture than income taxes.

Why startups fail

closed

Many startups build things people don’t want with the irrational hope that they’ll convince them otherwise.

When a startup shuts its doors, it is customary to write an essay that tells the rest of the community what went wrong, called a failure post-mortem. It’s estimated that nine out of 10 startups fail, which is why the technique has become so common as to be a Silicon Valley cliché.

Rewiring your brain to become fluent in math

brain

Basic, deep-seated fluency in math and science—not just an “understanding,” is critical.

By Barbara Oakley: I was a wayward kid who grew up on the literary side of life, treating math and science as if they were pustules from the plague. So it’s a little strange how I’ve ended up now—someone who dances daily with triple integrals, Fourier transforms, and that crown jewel of mathematics, Euler’s equation. It’s hard to believe I’ve flipped from a virtually congenital math-phobe to a professor of engineering.

Gravity map exposes mysteries of the deep oceans

gravity model

The gravity model of the North Atlantic ocean basin reveals tectonic history in sharp detail.

It’s like someone pulled a plug in the oceans and drained them away as a sea-floor map has exposed thousands of never-before-seen underwater mountains and ridges. The map was generated by the highest-resolution gravity model ever made for the oceans and will guide deep-sea research for years to come. (Video)

Why rent is so expensive in cities: Parking spaces

underground parking

Underground parking is extremely expensive to build.

Many factors contribute to drive up the price of rents, but parking is among the most significant, according to University of California Los Angeles professor and renowned parking guru Donald Shoup. During the CityLab 2014 conference in Los Angeles last week BuzzFeed News sat down with Shoup to talk about how parking makes housing more expensive. His point: “It’s unfair to have cities where parking is free for cars and housing is expensive for people.”

Legendary concept artist Syd Mead talks about the problem with wearable technology

wearable tech

Syd Mead was illustrating “wearable” technology before it even had a name.

If anyone can call himself a “visual futurist” with a straight face, it’s Syd Mead is the legendary concept artist behind Blade RunnerTron, and Aliens. If anyone can call himself a “visual futurist” with a straight face, it’s Mead. No one better qualified to critique the present and future of wearable technologies.

Scientists develop 3D, continuously multidirectional cloaking device

3d-multidirectional-invisibility-cloak-1

The multidirectional “perfect paraxial” cloak bends light around the hand to show the grid on the wall.

Two University of Rochester scientists have taken invisibility cloaking back to basics. Their novel arrangement of four standard, off-the-shelf lenses keeps an object hidden (and the background undisturbed) as the viewer moves up to several degrees away from the optimal viewing angle. New treatments show promise in prolonging human life

young_vs_old

Drugs to slow aging already exist in the form of relatively cheap medicines that have been used for other purposes for years.

There is evidence that some widely used drugs can prolong lifespan for well people – and insiders have started taking them off-label. Millions of people are taking anti-aging drugs every day – they just don’t know it. Drugs to slow aging sound futuristic but they already exist in the form of relatively cheap medicines that have been used for other purposes for decades.
