The Future of Camping Could be in This High-Tech Tent

For those who prefer the comforts of home to pitching a tent in the great outdoors, a new innovation could make you rethink roughing it. The past few years have seen a new suite of products take the camping world by storm, offering high-tech, if not downright luxurious, alternatives to the basic nylon-and-metal tents of the past. One standout is the self-generating tent, a futuristic shelter conceived by Korean designers Shim Jieun, Won Boram, Oh Seobin, Kook Soo Jeong, and Seok Jiyoung.

A cure for baldness thanks to 3D printing?

Scientists think they might have finally cracked the cure for baldness, and in a fairly unusual way.

While traditional baldness ‘cures’ have tended to focus on lotions (think Homer Simpson), transplants (Wayne Rooney) or wigs (Trump?), new technology being developed by L’Oreal is using 3D printing. Continue reading… “A cure for baldness thanks to 3D printing?”

Quantum Computing is coming and bringing massive disruption with it

Next year, we may see the launch of the first true quantum computers.

The implications will be staggering.

This post aims to answer three questions:

  1. What are quantum computers?
  2. What are their implications?
  3. Who’s working on them?

There’s a lot to unpack here, so hang tight, and let’s jump in!

Google DeepMind AI Learns How To Talk Like Humans

Google has reached a milestone in its DeepMind artificial intelligence (A.I.) project with the successful development of technology that can mimic the sound of human voice.

Dubbed as WaveNet, the breakthrough was described as a deep neural network that can generate raw audio wave forms to generate speech. It can reportedly beat existing Text-to-Speech systems.

The First – Ever – Hydrogen Train Coming to Germany

As early as December 2017, we will see Germany become the first country ever to offer passengers the chance to ride on a hydrogen-powered train. This is part of Germany’s attempts to keep up with its conscious power reputation and to use 80 percent renewable energy by 2050. The new Coradis iLint trains will be introduced as an alternative to diesel powered trains as are much more environmentally friendly.

Clothing made entirely by robots is getting closer

When it comes to stitching together complex garments, dexterous human hands are still far superior to rigid robot arms.

Much of the garment production process is already automated, from picking cotton to spinning yarn to cutting clothes. Some specialist machines can even sew buttons or pockets. However, no commercial robot had been able to piece together all the different materials to create an entire item of clothing, like a pair of jeans or a t-shirt.

The Dubai Hyperloop: Superfast Transport Closer to Reality

Speeding Into The Future

Over the past few years, a number of governments have stepped forward in order to bring a host of innovative technologies to life, and in so doing, they have accelerated the future as never before. Now, Dubai has just taken us another great leap towards bringing some of the world’s most futuristic ideas to life.

The Dubai Future Foundation recently organized an International Hyperloop Competition in order to help make the (seemingly) impossible possible. The two day competition had contestants design three Hyperloop terminals which were evaluated by a panel of judges.

Beer Company Invents Six-Pack Rings That Feed, Rather Than Kill, Marine Life

A craft beer company and an ad agency brewed up a brilliant idea to save marine life if six-pack rings end up in the ocean. Are you aware that 80% of the plastic humans throw away ends up in the oceans? The sad reality is made worse when one learns that, as a result, billions of pounds of plastic are now swirling in convergences in the seas. In fact, 40% of earth’s total ocean mass is now covered by plastic.

Comma.ai will make your car semi-autonomous for $24 a month

Comma.ai, the self-driving car startup helmed by iPhone hacker George Hotz, has unveiled new details about its first commercial product, the newly named Comma One. According to a report from TechCrunch, the company claims this $999 after-market kit will allow buyers to give their cars semi-autonomous abilities on a par with Tesla’s Autopilot. The physical product will be shipping before the end of the year, says Comma.ai, and will require a $24 monthly subscription fee for access to Comma.ai’s software, as well as certain in-car features like electronic power steering. The aim, said Hotz when we spoke to him earlier this year, is to provide “ghost riding for the masses.”

3D printing can revolutionize the medical profession

Groundbreaking 3D printing and scanning techniques are improving access to fully customisable artificial limbs

Before the vehicle that she was travelling in flipped over and trapped her right leg, Leakhena Laing was a happy teenager who enjoyed climbing trees and playing football with friends. After her limb was amputated, she could only sit and watch.
