A more stylish option to wait out the apocalypse, is a fully sustainable floating home. The Unidentified Floating Home, from Italian mini yacht-maker offers a completely off-grid existence on the ocean. According to the company’s co-founders, Pierpaolo Lazzarini and Luca Solla, the UFO is intended for “living in a floating house and moving slowly around the world.” “Slowly” in this case means a leisurely maximum speed of 3.5 knots (6.5 km/h, 4 mph), using a waterjet-propelled Torqeedo Deep Blue 1800 electric motor.

Gene therapy against human aging successful

genetic_engineering_gm_encyclopaedia

Elizabeth Parrish, CEO of Bioviva USA Inc, has undergone a gene therapy, created by her own company that has reversed 20 years of telomere shortening. This makes Parrish the first human to be successfully rejuvenated by gene therapy. Telomere score is calculated according to telomere length of white blood cells (T-lymphocytes). This result is based on the average T-lymphocyte telomere length compared to the American population at the same age range. The higher the telomere score, the “younger” the cells.

Ray Kurzweil predicts Solar Will Dominate Energy Within 12 Years

solar energy

Ray Kurzweil has made a number of predictions that have been surprisingly correct in the last few decades. His newest prediction, made at a medical technology conference, is that in a little over a decade solar dominate the energy arena. That may be difficult to believe considering it currently only supplies 2% of global energy.

Robot Snakes are making underwater maintenance a whole lot easier

snake-robot-7

The new Eelume robot is a self propelled aquatic mechanical snake. The Eelume is designed to do subsea repair and inspection work that is difficult or impossible for humans to do. This robot is perfect for the task because it emulates something that actually lives under the sea.

Ray Kurzweil, Google’s chief futurist, is one of the biggest believers in The Singularity. The singularity is the moment when humans, with the aid of technology will live forever. In a recent interview with Playboy Kurzweil, laid out what he thinks the next few decades will look like. He pinpoints the exact year as being 2045 when, according to his calculations, nonbiological intelligence created that year will be a billion times more powerful than all of human intelligence today.

Why Gendered Robots Could Be Problematic

ex-machina-ava-robot

A gender designed robot is a deception and can lead to confusion and deception of vulnerable users. Designing robots to resemble men, women, boys or girls is immoral, and breaks one of the five principles of robotics, that robots should not be designed to be deceptive or exploit. Thier machine nature should always be transparent.

New nanowire battery can survive thousands of charges

Sony_Lithium_battery-thumb-450x515
Batteries haven’t seen a technological leap in years, mainly due to the volatile chemicals they contain. The most effective one produced being the lithium ion cell. Even with experimentation of exotic compounds the new wave of batteries is still many years away. Recently new research in the area of nanowires – surfaces “thousands of times thinner than a human hair” could prove to mitigate the short lifespan of batteries without needing any new chemicals. Transparent wood is the new glass

transparent wood

Wood, an inexpensive and renewable resource, has many applications. Including building materials for high rises, bicycles, and foam insulation. Recently researchers developed transparent wood for potential use in windows, and solar cells, providing a cheaper alternative to silica-based glass. Led by Prof. Lars Berglund at Sweden’s KTH Royal Institute of Technology, researchers chemically remove lignin from natural wood fibers – lignin is one component of wood cell walls. What was left was a material that was “beautifully white,” but still not transparent.

What food will we make with 3D printers?

54cb0b83a680d_-_3d-printed-food-02-0313-lgn
3d printing food is talked about a lot, but few sighting. No one really knows if its real or not. The idea is to take a 3D printer replace the non-edible material with something edible and delicious like food purée or mixes, etc.  The results have been less than amazing with taking perfectly good food and turning it into odd shapes designs. Still, a few companies are still trying to pave the way to real business in this space.
