GE made a real 3D printed plane engine and here is a gorgeous look at it

The printed plane engine has arrived.

This week GE released this great GIF of its 1,300-horsepower advanced turboprop (ATP) engine in which more than one-third of the components have been built through additive manufacturing, or 3D printing. The company is showing off its creation in real life at this week’s big air show in Oshkosh, WI.

Scientists just made implantable batteries powered by body fluids

Scientists have built flexible batteries for use in wearable electronics and medical implants that can operate from inside your body, powered by liquids like saline solution and cell-culture. Both the efficiency and the output of the batteries out-performed lithium-ion.

A ‘human swarm’ has figured out where Jeff Bezos should donate his money

Jeff Bezos tweeted in June that he wanted short-term, high-impact ways to do social good.

An artificial intelligence platform put 46,000 suggestions to a vote, using a method inspired by how bees swarm.

Universal access to clean drinking water was the winner.

Edible robot surgeons will cure you from the inside out

Back in 1985, the best robotic surgeon we had was the Puma 560, a manipulator arm just barely more advanced than Rocky Balboa’s robo-butler. Just barely. The Puma was nevertheless revolutionary. It was the very first mechanical operator, progenitor to steady-handed robo-surgeons like the DaVinci system. But in the near future, robots will no longer be cutting into us — from the outside, at least.

What is Ray Kurzweil up to at Google? Writing your emails

RAY KURZWEIL HAS invented a few things in his time. In his teens, he built a computer that composed classical music, which won him an audience with President Lyndon B. Johnson. In his 20s, he pioneered software that could digitize printed text, and in his 30s he cofounded a synthesizer company with Stevie Wonder. More recently, he’s known for popularizing the idea of the singularity—a moment sometime in the future when superintelligent machines transform humanity—and making optimistic predictions about immortality. For now, though, Kurzweil, 69, leads a team of about 35 people at Google whose code helps you write emails.
