3D-printed, driverless boats developed


The autonomous boats offer high maneuverability and precise control. They can be built using low-cost printer, making mass manufacturing more feasible.

MIT scientists have designed a fleet of 3D-printed, driverless boats that could ferry goods and people, helping clear up road congestion in waterway-rich cities such as Amsterdam, Bangkok and Venice – where canals run alongside and under bustling streets and bridges.

Harnessing Direct Solar Power

The sun is the most abundant source of renewable energy. But all the technologies that capitalize on sunlight, including photovoltaics and biofuels, require intermediate steps and infrastructure to turn the sun’s rays into something that can be used to perform work in a machine. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, are using carbon nanotubes to build small, simple waterborne machines propelled directly by sunlight. In theory, they say, these machines could be scaled up to make energy-generating pumps directly powered by the sun.

Student Inventors Keep The Pooping Seagulls Off Their Boat

Boat-loving seagulls will have to poop elsewhere if a team of high school students have anything to say about it. The team, named Vanish Productions, recently won the top regional prize in New Zealand’s Young Enterprise contest for their Ultrasonic Bird Repeller.
