How old is Barbie?  Not in how many years she has existed but how old is she? She is a close to a 19-year-old girl, right? VenusAngelic, a prominent, 15-year-old member of online ball-jointed-doll fandom, describes how she uses cosmetics to make herself look like a doll, narrating it in a kind of whispering, Asian-inflected voice. I confess that this isn’t my subculture or interest, and VenusAngelic’s opening remarks, “Hello my dolly molly inky pinky cotton candy clouds!” are not the sort of thing that I’d be likely to say to other people. But VenusAngelic’s cultural identity seems to me to have the kind of deeply transgressive edge that characterizes the best teenaged subcultures, the kind of thing that evokes panicked, hostile, knee-jerk reactions from grownups. 123 year old recording may be Edison’s talking doll

Using advanced imaging technology, scientists have recovered a 123-year-old recording made by Thomas Edison. The recording is believed to be the world’s first attempt at a talking doll and may mark the dawn of the American recording industry.

Lawmaker Wants To Outlaw Barbies


Banning the Bimbette?

We’ve all heard someone complain about the stereotypes and sexism associated with Barbies, but now Democrat Jeff Eldridge wants to have the dolls banned in West Virginia. He claims the dolls encourage girls to focus too much importance on looks, rather than brains.

The announcement came right as Mattel is prepping up to celebrate Barbie’s 50th birthday on March 9th.

This Saturday marks 31 years since Presley died at Graceland and the maker of Barbie is coming out with the first-ever Elvis and Priscilla Presley dolls.The dolls are wearing replica outfits of what the Presleys wore on their wedding day in Las Vegas in 1967. The Elvis doll is dressed in a black paisley print tuxedo with boutonniere and black boots. Priscilla’s doll is wearing a gown of white chiffon and satin, with tiara and veil. (Pics)
