Work is a fundamental part of being human. Robots won’t stop us doing it

Hardly a week goes by without a report announcing the end of work as we know it.

In 2013, Oxford University academics Carl Frey and Michael Osborne were the first to capture this anxiety in a paper titled: “The Future of Employment: How susceptible are jobs to computerisation?”.

They concluded 47% of US jobs were threatened by automation. Since then, Frey has taken multiple opportunities to repeat his predictions of major labour market disruptions due to automation.

In the face of threats to employment, some progressive thinkers advocate jettisoning our work ethic and building a world without work.

If machines can do our work, why not reduce the working week drastically? We should be mature enough to decide what truly matters to us, without tying our identity to a job, or measuring happiness in dollars and professional status. Right?

Not quite.

Women have evolved to be ‘indirectly aggressive’: Study

Women are more likely to form social alliances and then manage threats from outsiders through social exclusion.

In a lab at McMaster University in Ontario, researchers took 86 straight women and paired them off into groups of two—either with a friend or a stranger. There, a researcher told them they were about to take part in a study about female friendships. But they were soon interrupted by one of two women.

Humans are still evolving: study

wingman

Even though humans are still evolving, don’t expect any winged mutants.

On TV shows like “Heroes” and movies like “X-Men, ordinary people seem to evolve to have extraordinary capabilities. But people in real life don’t have genetic mutations that give rise to extraordinary capabilities such as telepathy or wings.  But human evolution is still happing according to scientists.  Proceedings of the National Academy of Science has published a new study that offers some if the best evidence so far.

Scientists reverse evolution to create chickens that grow alligator-like snouts

chicken

Altering the DNA of chicken embryos can give them qualities they lost millions of years ago.

Chickens and other birds are thought to have descended from dinosaurs through a series of genetic changes. Scientists have rewound 65 million years of evolutionary history by tweaking chicken DNA to create embryos that grow alligator-like snouts rather than beaks.

Study: Women Have Called the Shots at Home for Millions of Years

raquel welch

‘Alpha cavewomen’ roamed the plains while slothful menfolk stayed at home, according to a study.

It’s finally been confirmed what every woman from Raquel Welch to Wilma Flintstone has always suspected.  The female of the species was very much the boss even back in prehistoric times.

Women with high levels of the sex hormone oestrogen have prettier faces, research suggests.  The findings make evolutionary sense – men are attracted to the most fertile women, the University of St Andrews team told a Royal Society journal. (pics)

Are Humans Becoming More Stupid? Man’s Brain Has Been Shrinking Over Last 20,000 Years

brain

A 3D image replica of a 28,000-year-old skull found in France shows it was 20 per cent larger than ours.

It’s not something we’d like to admit, but it seems the human race may actually be becoming increasingly dumb.  Man’s brain has been gradually shrinking over the last 20,000 years, according to a new report.
