Graphene contact lenses could give everyone night vision


Contact lenses with night vision could be on the way.

We all might be able to experience soon the super hero ability of having night vision thanks to graphene contact lenses. Contact lenses one day in the near future will be able to register the entire infrared spectrum as well as visible and ultraviolet light, according to Zhaohui Zhong, an assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Michigan.

$150 smartphone spectrometer can tell the number of calories in your food


The SCiO is a handheld molecular analyzer.

If you wanted to look up the calorie content of a specific food you are eating you could take it to a lab and run it through a spectrometer. But accurate spectrometers are huge, expensive machines that are often only owned by institutions and require training to use. A new startup, however, wants to make it easy as running an app and pairing a bluetooth dongle. (Video)

MIT Scientists Create First Magnetic Gas


For decades, scientists have debated whether or not gasses could display the same magnetic properties as solids. Now, thanks to some MIT scientists, they know the answer is a freezing cold yes.  MIT researchers have observed magnetism in an atomic gas of lithium cooled down to 150 millionths of a degree above absolute zero. This experiment represents a point of unification between condensed matter research and the field of atomic science and lasers, and could influence areas such as data storage and medical diagnostics.

New Images From The Repaired Hubble Space Telescope


A small region inside the globular cluster Omega Centauri, which has nearly 10 million stars

Astronomers unveiled new pictures and observations from the Hubble Space Telescope. With the exception of a picture last month of the bruise on Jupiter caused by a comet, they were the first data obtained with the telescope since a crew spent 13 days in orbit last May replacing, refurbishing and rebuilding its vital components.  (Pics)
