Japan launches affordable Epsilon rocket using artificial intelligence

Japan has launched a rocket, Epsilon, into space in what it hopes will be the start of cheaper space exploration.  The rocket is about half the size of normal rockets, and relies on artificial intelligence to do its final safety checks–meaning just eight people were at the launch site, rather than the 150 needed for previous launches. On board was the Sprint-A telescope, which was released 620 miles above the Earth’s surface, and which will be observing Venus, Mars, and Jupiter.

Eco-cycle is an automated bike parking system

Many urban cites don’t have enough street space for setting up proper bike storage infrastructure.  The problem of overcrowding and illegal parking can cause potential hazards for emergency situations and general pedestrian navigation. In Japan, an earthquake-resistant underground bike parking system has been developed by Giken to help resolve the issue, approaching the situation through their design concept, which is based on culture above ground, and function underground. Virgin Mobile’s ‘blinkwashing’ ad changes scenes when the viewer blinks

Virgin Mobile decided to harness our contempt for advertisements into nothing other than another advertisement: 25, to be exact. There is something different about this ad campaign, though. If you blink just once, you just might miss it. Using the power of your webcam and your eyes, the phone company created something called “blinkwashing,” which kinda sounds like some sort of psychological torture. As the final installment in Virgin’s “Retrain Your Brain” campaign, the ad’s premise is to persuade consumers to ditch their current “controlling” pricey mobile plans for Virgin’s no-contract ones.

A new smarter way to 3D print unveiled by MIT researchers

When it comes to 3D printing there seems to be few limits to what the technology can do or what range of products it can spawn, from lampshades to lunar bases.  It’s easy to neglect one key factor amid all the hype: Printing capabilities are directly wedded to the size of one’s printer. As home printers become more readily available, the size of their printing beds shrink. Any budding designer with a desktop 3-D printer can create an intricate scale model of the Millennium Falcon, but what about something as straightforward yet functional as a chair? It simply won’t fit inside the printing box.

Robohand: A 3D printed functional prosthetic hand at a DIY price

Twelve year old Dylan Laas says Robohand makes him look like Darth Vader. Dylan is missing the fingers on one hand as a result of Amniotic Band Syndrome. For $150, the 3-D printed Robohand lets him grab things with bendable fingers, which most prosthetic hands don’t. (Video)

Drones provide Colorado flooding assistance until FEMA grounded them

There has been unbelievable flooding going on in Colorado. The rain has made it difficult (or impossible) for airplanes and helicopters to get in and out of the area. Drones can fly in and out, though, and while they’re not able to pick up people or drop off supplies, they are able to make damage assessment maps to help relief agencies coordinate their efforts. Or at least, they were, until the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) showed up and grounded them. (Video)

The above video, created by filmmaker Anthony Cerniello, is equal parts mind-blowing and unsettling. With help from a couple of animators and a photographer, Cerniello, created the timelapse-like animation that captures the process of aging in a way we’ve never seen before.

China’s delivery companies testing parcel delivery with drones

SF Express is testing a drone it has built for delivering packages in China.

The US has a couple-decade head start on China in building drones that kill people. But when it comes to domestic uses, US businesses are hamstrung because the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) isn’t required to issue commercial drone rules until 2015. In the meantime, one of China’s biggest delivery companies is tinkering with using drones—with Chinese government permission. (Video)

JetSurf – a high-tech motorized surfboard

JetSurf takes watersports to a whole new level.  This gas-powered mini-surfboard is about the size of a wakeboard, and its carbon-fiber-and-kevlar body is powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine.  You don’t need waves (or paddling) to move. You just hold on to the handle, press the hand-operated control unit, and you’re off and surfing.
