New study : Every electric car brings $10,000 in life-saving benefits

Converting all cars and SUVs in the Greater Toronto area into electric vehicles would cause 313 fewer deaths per year, an estimated social benefit of $2.4 billion. That’s the high-level finding of a study published today by Environmental Defence and the Ontario Public Health Association.

EV drivers cite numerous reasons for ditching a gas car and buying an EV: lower operating costs, high resale values, quick and quiet acceleration, and mitigating climate change. But what’s more compelling than saving human lives?

The world’s first autonomous zero-emissions ship

The vessel “YARA Birkeland” will be the world’s first fully electric and autonomous container ship, with zero emissions. Operation is planned to start in the latter half of 2018, shipping products from YARA’s Porsgrunn production plant to Brevik and Larvik in Norway.

Autonomous and 100% electric, “YARA Birkeland” will be the world’s most advanced container feeder ship.

The Cri-Cri

Reminiscent of James Bond’s fold-away Acrostar mini-plane, the Cri-Cri is the world’s smallest electric plane and this week made its official maiden flight at Le Bourget airport near Paris. Jointly developed by EADS Innovation Works, Aero Composites Saintonge and the Green Cri-Cri Association, the lillipution aircraft is the first-ever four-engined all-electric aerobatic plane. Boeing Test First Fuel Cell, Zero-Emissions Aircraft

Finally, all of the fuel cell hype is starting to pay off

The Dimona Fuel Cell Plane is a joint venture test craft modified by Boeing Research and Intelligent Energy. The first test flight took place in Spain recently and seemed to go well in that no-one died and the thing flew for a while without mishap. We’re talking 62 mph at 3,300 feet for 20 minutes, so it’s not going to break any records, but don’t forget that this is zero-emission stuff. Gotta be a good sign. Video.
