Willie Nelson’s new Remedy adds CBD oil to your coffee

Turns out Willie Nelson wasn’t kidding when he and Merle Haggard sang “It’s All Going to Pot” in 2015.

In 2016, he launched Willie’s Reserve, his own brand of weed with it’s partner brand, Annie Edibles, featuring his wife, Annie Nelson’s artisanal chocolates and infused hard candies. Last year, they expanded the brand with a new product line dubbed SunGrown.

Now the couple has launched a new wellness brand, Willie’s Remedy, which focuses on non-intoxicating cannabidiol (CBD) oil. Their first product is CBD-infused coffee made from Annie Nelson’s personal recipe. After a soft launch last year, the coffee is now available for purchase online. When properly brewed, the coffee is said to deliver 5 mg of CBD oil per 8 oz cup. Your infused caffeine shots will not be cheap, an 8 oz bag of whole coffee beans retails for $36, but according to the press release, the oil comes from “only the cleanest American-sourced hemp.”

Self-Propelling pills could mean the end of needle vaccines

A new type of tiny motor can help shuttle life-saving vaccines to where they need to go. For infants or those of us who are squeamish around needles, that could mean a future with fewer shots and more effective medicine.

The problem with oral vaccines — ones that take pill form — is that they can sometimes get broken down by stomach acid or get spit right back up by a child. That’s why researchers are interested in tiny, molecular motors that can propel the pills through the body to their target, making orally-consumed medication more effective than ever before.

Yeast-derived “animal products” may soon be part of an environmentally balanced diet.

In 2008, the biotech industry had fallen on tough times: capital was drying up and businesses were struggling to survive. That’s when Ryan Bethencourt saw an opportunity. A biologist with an entrepreneurial streak, he and a couple of friends started buying equipment from bankrupt companies and setting up their own small labs. By 2013, he had co-founded Counter Culture Labs, a “biohacker” space in Oakland, California. There, DIY-biology enthusiasts are now working on, among other projects, making real cheese in a way that bypasses the cow.

Bethencourt is part of a growing group of scientists, entrepreneurs, and lab tinkerers who are forging a bold new food future—one without animals. But they’re not asking everyone to give up meat and dairy. Thanks to advances in synthetic biology, they’re developing ways to produce actual animal products—meat, milk, egg whites, collagen—in the lab. And in doing so, they are shrinking the carbon footprint and slashing the land and water requirements of these goods with the goal of meeting the world’s growing protein needs more sustainably.

A new photo series shows the lengths some people go to to edit their photos for Instagram.
The project, by renowned photographer Rankin, asked 15 British teenagers to take five minutes editing their appearances to make them “social media-ready.”
Most of them made their noses narrower, slimmed their faces, edited out their freckles, enlarged their eyes and lips, and added makeup.
Rankin says the project highlights that “we are living in a world of FOMO, sadness, increased anxiety, and Snapchat dysmorphia.”

An extreme concentration of wealth in a city where even the air is for sale has produced a new breed of needle-like tower. By Oliver Wainwright

It is rare in the history of architecture for a new type of building to emerge. The Romans’ discovery of concrete birthed the great domes and fortifications of its empire. The Victorians’ development of steel led to an era of majestic bridges and vaulted train sheds. The American invention of the elevator created the first skyscrapers in Chicago. Now, we are seeing a new type of structure that perfectly embodies the 21st-century age of technical ingenuity and extreme inequality. A heady confluence of engineering prowess, zoning loopholes and an unparalleled concentration of personal wealth have together spawned a new species of super-tall, super-skinny, super-expensive spire.

Any visitor to New York over the past few years will have witnessed this curious new breed of pencil-thin tower. Poking up above the Manhattan skyline like etiolated beanpoles, they seem to defy the laws of both gravity and commercial sense. They stand like naked elevator shafts awaiting their floors, raw extrusions of capital piled up until it hits the clouds.

New projection : World population will level off, then fall forever

The conventional wisdom is that the global population is hurtling toward catastrophe — some project it could hit a staggering 11 billion by the year 2100.

But a new book examines the data and comes to a radically different conclusion: instead of continuing to rise, the population will level out in about 30 years — and then start to decline, possibly forever.

In the U.S., a mere 3 percent of grocery spending takes place online today.
A new study by Bain & Co. in collaboration with Google finds shoppers are still reluctant to try delivery services and often don’t stick with them.
But the firm predicts grocery delivery will ultimately take off as companies continue to invest in it.

Harley-Davidson has declared that the future is electric — and it’s quickly scaling up a pipeline of electric bikes.
Two new concepts unveiled last week at the X Games in Colorado wouldn’t require a motorcycle license and could be charged with a normal wall plug, the company says.
Courting new riders, including city dwellers and millennials, is key to the company’s turnaround plans.

The fastest-growing job in each U.S. state

The unemployment rate rose slightly to 4.0% in January 2019, while the labor force participation rate hit its highest mark since 2013. Overall, the report indicated that the U.S. labor market is still chugging along.

And some jobs are growing faster than others. Construction and extraction jobs are in high demand in the U.S., along with installation, maintenance, and repair services. Production jobs are also quickly developing, as are mathematical and technology-focused occupations.

Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and projections from the government-backed Projections Managing Partnership (PMP), we mapped out the top jobs by growth rate (as opposed to plentifulness).

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has made a bold prediction about Bitcoin

Bitcoin has had a troubled start to 2019 with many predicting the long-running bitcoin bear market, which has seen the bitcoin price fall by some 80% over the last 12 months, could run on well into this year.

Not all are predicting doom and gloom for bitcoin, however. And now the chief executive of microblogging site Twitter and payments processor Square, Jack Dorsey, has repeated his prediction that bitcoin will “probably” become the internet’s “native currency.”

This isn’t the first time the often controversial Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey has said he expects bitcoin to continue growing.

Dorsey, who has previously talked up the potential of bitcoin and decentralized cryptocurrencies, was speaking to podcaster Joe Rogan in a wide-ranging interview that covered bitcoin, blockchain, free speech, and the formation of Twitter and Square.

Carlo Ratti designs driverless robotic bar called Guido

Italian architect Carlo Ratti has revealed his concept for an autonomous robotic cafe and bar that would make on-demand cocktails for city-dwellers wherever they are.

The driverless drinks cart, called Guido, has a unit with two mechanical arms – one for shaking and stirring and another for pouring and serving – that can accurately prepare and serve any drink within seconds, mounted onto a self-driving vehicle platform.
