The World Bank is no longer supporting the oil and gas industries

The World Bank is starting to phase out its support for the oil and gas industries.

The move is part of efforts to address climate change and reinforce the Paris Climate agreement.

It also suggests that the Bank intends to play a leading role in the battle against climate change as the US turns its back on global environmental leadership.

You may soon be able to skip the grocery checkout line at Kroger

After a 25-store test run over the last couple years, Kroger is expanding the Scan, Bag, Go service to roughly 400 stores during 2018. Somewhat similar to Amazon’s Go convenience store, shoppers at Kroger will be able to fill their shopping basket with scanned items and exit the store after a quick stop at a self-checkout station.

India wants panic buttons on mobile phones to keep women safe—will it work?

The Indian government has a hack for women’s safety: a panic button.

Come Jan. 26, a pilot project to test a panic button feature on mobile phones will be launched in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh (UP), Maneka Gandhi, the union minister for women and child development, said on Jan. 02.

A tsunami of store closings is about to hit the US — and it’s expected to eclipse the retail carnage of 2017

More than 12,000 stores are expected to close in 2018 – up from roughly 9,000 in 2017, according to Cushman & Wakefield.

A rash of bankruptcy filings and announcements to close stores are expected at the start of the year, when retailers are flush with cash from the holiday season.

Among the companies most likely to file for bankruptcy within the next year are Sears, Bon-Ton Stores, Bebe Stores, Destination Maternity Corp., and Stein Mart.

The closings would push hundreds of shopping malls to the brink of death.
