At a Drexel University lab in Philadelphia, a desktop 3-D printer is printing miniature samples of bones. In Toronto, another researcher is using the same printer to make living tumors for drug testing. It looks like an ordinary 3-D printer, but instead of plastic, it squirts out living cells.

Researchers develop new process that raises prospects of 3D printed bone grafts

3D printing could help mend broken bones.

One of the 3D printing health applications of 3D printing discussed the most is the manufacturing of bespoke scaffolds that could be used to mend broken bones. It’s promising, but it  has been held back by the difficulties in printing materials that are strong, flexible and can encourage the regrowth of healthy bone in the same way as current methods, such as bone grafts.

How 3D printing can build new bone using stem cells

Using 3D printing, researchers can create scaffolds to repair/replace bone tissue.

A new technique that involves 3D printing a tissue using living stem cells could repair damaged bones. For example, if a child had a jawbone defect, you could take an image of the defect, feed it into a computer and print a replacement to precisely fill the defect using the patient’s own cells, said Kevin Shakeshaff, a pharmacist at the University of Nottingham in England.

Researchers at Columbia University have regrown the destroyed joints of rabbits by shaping a scaffolding that encourages bones to heal in particular forms:

In research published this week in The Lancet, the researchers demonstrate that the technology–a joint-shaped scaffold infused with a growth factor protein–works in rabbits. About a month after the implant, the animals began using their injured forelimbs again, and at two months the animals moved almost as well as similarly aged healthy rabbits.
