How Long Before I Can 3D Print a Replacement Body for Myself?

3D-printing-humans-1

Futurist Thomas Frey: A couple weeks ago I turned 60. I remember how old 60 was when I was a kid, and now I’m here.

As a person who spends a lot of time asking “what if” questions, constantly thinking about extreme possibilities, the notion of 3D printing a replacement body for myself became very intriguing.

I remember seeing science fiction movies where cloned bodies were grown over long periods of time, and more recent ones with accelerated cloning technology, but the 3D printing of replacement bodies is a faster option, just now coming into view.

Bioprinting is the process of using 3D printers to form human tissue. This process that has already been used to print replacement kidneys, bladders, livers, skin, bones, teeth, noses, and ears, as well as prosthetic arms and legs. This is a list that didn’t even exist 5 years ago, but is now growing on a regular basis.

Scientists one step away from cloning adult humans

stemcells

It might soon be possible to grow human body parts in a lab, even from older adults’ stem cells.

For the first time ever human cloning has been used to create stem cells for adults in a breakthrough which could lead to tissue and organs being regrown. Scientists have turned the skin cells of a 75-year-ol man into stem cells, which can grow into any type of tissue in the body.

Chinese Scientist Exploring Cloning to Save the Endangered Giant Panda

pandas

The Giant Panda is the world’s most endangered species.

China has been exploring every possible means of saving giant pandas, one of the world’s most endangered species, from becoming extinct, even if it means resorting to cloning them.   Chen Dayuan, a senior scientist who specializes in cloning at the institute of zoology in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, introduced the idea of performing cloning techniques on giant pandas in 1998.

Metaphase in a human cervical carcinoma (HeLa) cell. Chromosomes (red), microtubules (green).

If you can imagine identical twin sisters at rest, their breath drawing them subtly together and apart, who somehow latch onto ropes that pull them to opposite sides of the bed — you can imagine what happens to a chromosome in the dividing cell.

New research identifies the ‘speed gene’ contributing to a specific athletic trait in thoroughbred horses.

Groundbreaking research led by Dr Emmeline Hill, a leading horse genomics researcher at University College Dublin’s (UCD) School of Agriculture, Food Science and Veterinary Medicine has resulted in the identification of the ‘speed gene’ in thoroughbred horses.

Ethical Questions Raised When Lab Produces Monkeys With Two Mothers

monkeys

Scientists have produced monkeys with genetic material from two mothers, an advance that could help women with some inherited diseases have healthy children but that would raise a host of safety, legal, ethical and social questions if attempted in people.

‘Glowing’ Transgenic Monkeys Carrying Green Fluorescent Protein Gene Pave Way For New Disease Models

A transgenic line of monkeys carrying a gene encoding green fluorescent protein fully integrated into their DNA has been created for the first time. The research, published in the journal Nature, marks the first such feat in non-human primates and paves the way for developing new models of human diseases

Online Auctions for Cloning Dogs

Online Auctions for Cloning Dogs

Very soon all of our dogs will begin to look like Tom Cruise

A California company is planning a string of online auctions next month to clone five dogs, with the bidding to start at $100,000. Scientists consider dogs among the most difficult animals to clone because they have an unusual reproductive biology, more so than humans.

But the company behind the auctions, BioArts International, maintains that the technology is ready, and it is calling the dog cloning project Best Friends Again. It has scheduled the auctions for June 18.
