Engineer Vs. Designer, a design blog has challenged the 3D printing community to create “the most absurd 3D-printable iPhone accessory” one can imagine (and, in turn, have a chance to win a MakerBot Replicator). The result? A whole basket-load of crazy. (Pics)

On Tuesday, laser experts reported that they’ve now succeeded in using an experimental camera to capture three-dimensional images of objects even when they’re hidden around a corner.

3D printed nanoscale race car.
Researchers at the Vienna University of Technology decided to print a race car on a nanoscale, using lasers. “The focal point of the laser beam is guided through the resin by movable mirrors and leaves behind a polymerized line of solid polymer, just a few hundred nanometers wide. This high resolution enables the creation of intricately structured sculptures as tiny as a grain of sand.” This is a technique they call “two-photon lithography.” (Video)

Balaji Tammabattula’s invention allows anyone to duplicate any item, simply by photographing it.
Following the recent development of 3D printing technology, one Indian Computer Scientist has taken the revolution one step further.
The lenses sit directly on the eyeball, and have been engineered using nanoscale techniques to work as a focusing device that pairs with a pair of hi-tech glasses.
Innovega, a company in the U.S. says, contact lenses which focus 3D screens directly into people’s eyeballs could be on sale as early as 2014. The tiny ‘screens’ sit directly on users’ eyeballs and work with a pair of lightweight glasses with a built-in translucent screen.

The world’s smallest map is composed of 500,000 pixels, each measuring 20 nm2 and was created in only 2.23 minutes.
Zurich scientists have created the world’s smallest 3D map – of the world. IBM’s perfectly formed ‘nano-world’, has now been accepted by the Guinness World Record organization. (Pics)

Pupils in 3D classes could remember more than the 2D classes.
Students remember more and behave better when 3D images are used in lessons, new research suggest. They are quicker to learn and absorb new concepts, and display higher levels of concentration.

‘St Paul’s and London craning skyward’ is one of the illusions in street artist Kurt Wenner’s new book ‘Asphalt Renaissance’
On London’s Embankment it looks like a rainforest has appeared, but this is just an illusion created by renowned street artist Kurt Wenner. (Pics)

Sun-powered, sand-fed 3D printer.
Design student Markus Kayser wanted to test his sun-powered, sand-fed 3-D printer, but he knew the gray skies in London wouldn’t do. He decided to ship the 200-plus-pound contraption to Cairo, Egypt, flew there himself, and haggled with officials for two days to get it out of customs. A few small “tips” and 11 hours of driving later, he finally made it to the Sahara. But soon the mercury hit 104 degrees, his components nearly overheated, and he was forced to improvise.
