Bitcoin is going to use as much electricity as Austria by the year’s end

At this point, mining Bitcoin requires such intensive, specific hardware that the only way for most people to get in on the crypto game is to simply purchase the coin via an exchange. But that doesn’t mean mining has slowed down. Rather, the opposite has been happening, giving environmentalists (and anyone but the most adamant cryptobros) cause for concern.

Between cooling fans, manufacturing hardware, and the outrageous, ever-rising energy costs needed to operate a bitcoin mining rig, the world’s Bitcoin network is expected to use as much as 7.67 gigawatts of power by the end of 2018, according to new research and models. That’s one two-hundredth of all the electricity used on the planet. And that’s terrible.

Dutch company using living plants to power streetlights

Dutch company harnessing electricity from living plants.

The Dutch company Plant-e, is using living plants to power more than 300 streetlights, WiFi hotspots, and cell phone chargers.  The “Starry Sky” project started in November 2014 by Plant-e near Amsterdam in an old ammunition site called HAMburg.

The International Energy Agency has come out with an in-depth analysis of Africa’s energy sector.  According to the IEA report, there are 620 million people in sub-Saharan Africa who don’t have any electricity at all — and fixing that could require burning a lot more fossil fuels.

100% of the world’s power could be supplied by renewables by 2050

Even though wind power uses up to 14 times more iron, the world wins on a switch to low-carbon energy.

A global low-carbon energy economy could actually double electricity supply by 2050, while also reducing air and water pollution, according to new research. The first ever global life-cycle assessment of clean energy sources shows that a renewable system could supply the world’s entire electricity needs by mid-century, writes Tim Radford.

New fuel cell system will heat and power homes using natural gas

The fuel cell system is based on the solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology.

Those interested in off-the-grid heating and power sources for the home might soon be getting a new option. The Germany-based Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems (IKTS) has joined forces with the heater manufacturer Vaillant and together they have come up with a domestic fuel cell system, which uses natural gas to produce both heat and electricity.

Leading consultants were skeptical about cellular phones in the 1980’s. McKinsey & Co. noted that the handsets were heavy, batteries didn’t last long, coverage was patchy, and the cost per minute was exorbitant.
