Futurist Thomas Frey:  In 1936 Edwin Howard Armstrong unveiled an improvement in radio that would later become known as FM radio. Working out of an office on the 82nd floor of the Empire State Building, an office provided by RCA, Armstrong was on the verge of revolutionizing the radio industry. But it was a revolution that would not happen for several decades.

1940’s whiskey ads predicted the future

“Perfected television and radio telephone combined!”

Seagram’s advertised its VO Canadian whiskey back in the mid-1940’s with a series of extremely manly magazine ads about “Men Who Plan Beyond Tomorrow”. They were unspecified futuristic thinkers who liked the fact that Seagram’s was patient enough to age VO for six years. Each of the ads depicted a different miracle that would transform postwar America and they were glorious.  (Pics)

Thomas Frey, a futurist and executive director at the DaVinci Institute, has  been drawing inspiration from the success of large-scale incentive-based prize competitions as he announced a series of eight massively difficult competitions during his keynote July 10th at the World Future Society’s “WorldFuture 2011″ event in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

American cities built for the young strained by aging boomers

Atlanta Regional Commission project constructed the new ramp to accomodate the aging population in Atlanta.

People are getting old, fast, and they’re doing it in cities designed for the young.  Cities in American are grappling with that fact as work on getting the communities ready for an older population has gotten a late start considering demographers have warned for a long time that the population is about to get older.

Lockheed Martin begins biomechanical testing of the ruggedized HULCTM exoskeleton at the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center in Natick, Mass.  Based on feedback from soldiers, the testing is expected to help shape future requirements for the HULC .

Google adds speech recognition to its search engine

Speech recognition searches may take time for web users to get used to.

Asking a computer out loud for information is seen as a futurist idea right out of science fiction.  But Google is trying to change that.  They are adding speech recognition to its search engine which will release technology that will allow any browser, website, or app to use the feature.
