Scientists Develop Pill to Mend Broken Heart

Taking the pill when a heart attack occurs, the muscles and blood vessels around the organ could rebuild themselves.

Researchers in Britain claim they may be just a decade away from perfecting a way to persuade the heart to rejuvenate – a process thought to be impossible just five years ago.  They have developed a pill that triggers the heart to repair itself after an attack and is a major step towards one of the “holy grails” of medical research.

Carbon Nanotube Patch Could Help Heal the Heart

A tiny patch made out of carbon nanotubes may help regenerate heart cells.

According to research from Brown University, a conductive patch of carbon nanotubes can regenerate heart tissue growing in a dish.  The patch, made of tiny chains of carbon atoms that fold in on themselves, forming a tube, conducts electricity and mimics the rough surface of natural tissue. The more nanotubes the Brown researchers added to the patch, the more cells around it were able to regenerate.

Diet soda increases your risk of vascular events.

For years diet soda has been portrayed as the “healthier soda” choice because it has no calories. But zero calorie sweeteners like saccharin and aspartame come with risks including a link with bladder cancer, brain tumors, and osteoporosis. If that’s not reason enough to put down the frighteningly sweet bubbled beverage, new research recently presented at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference in Los Angeles found that daily intake of diet soda increases your risk of vascular events by 61 percent, according to a story on the Today Show.

Blood Type ‘O’ Protects Against Heart Attacks

Having type ‘O’ blood may give some protection against heart attacks.

Blood group ‘O’ protects people against heart attacks , say researchers.  A new study, published in The Lancet journal, has revealed that the same gene which creates the enzyme that causes people to be blood group ‘O’ gives them some protection against heart attacks.
