Patches could help repair damaged hearts.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the US for both men and women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 735,00 Americans have a heart attack each year, and 610,000 die of heart disease.

Those who survive heart attacks remain at serious risk for heart failure. During a heart attack, the network of blood vessels that delivers blood to the heart, called the coronary arteries, experiences a blockage due to buildup of cholesterol and fatty deposits. Blood can’t flow through to the heart, which means it doesn’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs, causing tissue to die.

Heart attack survivors are thus left with a heart that’s weaker, making everyday tasks like lifting objects or climbing stairs exhausting or even dangerous. Restoring damaged heart tissue has proved difficult if not impossible, but a research team from Imperial College London has a new tool they hope will be able to heal wounded hearts.

Drones to deliver defibrillators to heart attack victims

The Defikopter

Definetz, a German non-profit group, wants to make defibrillators readily available across its country so that any time someone has a heart attack, the life saving devices are within arms reach. Definetz is looking to drones to help it bring its vision to fruition. The group has announced the Defikopter, a concept device it designed with drone-maker Height Tech to fly defibrillators to emergency responders or the public by way of a GPS-enabled smartphone app.

Daylight savings time tied to an increase in heart attack rates

Shifts to and from daylight savings time may be linked with small increases in heart attacks in the spring, and small decreases in the fall.

According to a small new study, setting the clock ahead for daylight savings time may set the scene for a small increase in heart attacks the next day, suggesting that sleep-deprivation might be to blame.

Daily multivitamin does not cut risk of heart attack: Study

About a third of Americans take a daily multivitamin.

The risk of heart attack and stroke was not cut by taking a daily multivitamin in a study that followed more than 14,500 men for over a decade.  There was a small reduction in cancer risk, according to results from the study released in October.

Daylight could reduce risk of having a heart attack

heart attack

Daylight exposure inside hospital could also reduce the damage caused by a heart attack.

Treating a heart attack victim could be as simple as exposing them to light.  Doctors say strong light or even just daylight could cut the risk of having a heart attack or suffering permanent damage after having one.

New blood test could predict heart attacks: Study

blood test

The study found that the endothelial blood cells from heart attack patients are abnormally large and misshapen.

Researchers in the U.S. have found oddly-shaped blood cells in heart attack patients, indicating that a blood test could help predict whether a patient is at risk of an imminent cardiac emergency.

One soft drink a day raises heart attack risk in men by 20%: Study

heart attack

The body may compensate for the sugar rush of soft drinks by making its own supply of fats.

Men who drink only one sugar-laden soft drink every day could be dramatically increasing the odds of having a heart attack. A study of more than 40,000 men suggested that a daily sugar-sweetened drink raised the chances of having a heart attack – including a deadly one – by 20 per cent.

Stem cells can reverse heart attack damage

stem_cells

A ground-breaking study that may change how heart attacks are treated.

When a person has a heart attack a piece of muscle in a person’s heart dies from lack of blood flow , it scars over and is lost.  But a team of researchers from the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute in Los Angeles has proven that those muscles may not necessarily be gone forever.

Shoveling snow really does increase risk of heart attack

shoveling-snow

Snow shoveling increases risk of having a heart attack.

A new study confirms that snow shoveling really does increase the risk of heart attack. While many people believe this, there has been little actual evidence, according to researchers at Queen’s University in Kingston, Canada. So they decided to look for proof.
