Plus smart glasses from Google, transforming drones, AR clothing and other patents from Big Tech.

It’s the weekend! Time to switch my digital avatar’s outfit from a suit to lounge pants. I don’t actually live in VR yet (though I did try working in it this week), but a new patent from Amazon might make that a reality sooner rather than later. The company’s also working on drones that could get deliveries to me even quicker than its other drones, and Facebook is working on making immersive videos work on any screen in my house. Who needs to go outside when I can bring the entire world to my couch? Big Tech’s patents this week seem very on board with me staying at home as long as I want to.

And remember: The big tech companies file all kinds of crazy patents for things, and though most never amount to anything, some end up defining the future.

‘Mind-reading device’ recreates what we are seeing in our heads onto a screen

brain-machine

Mind reading could become a reality after scientists unveiled a device which translates what we are seeing in our heads onto a screen.

Researchers were able to recreate a moving picture similar to the real footage being played by monitoring the brain activity of people while they watched Hollywood movie trailers.

Scientists Announce They Can Decode Words from Brain Signals

One day this technique could be used with paralysed patients and those ‘locked-in’ with brain damage.

A person’s mind is his or her castle. While the workings of a distant star or galaxy can be probed with precision, what goes on within the grey jelly that lies inside our skulls is  –  or has been until now  –  profoundly unknowable to the outside world.

Some brains actually need crash protection

Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh have developed a ‘mind-reading’ computer.

It is hoped the mind-reading machine, which can forecast the activity patterns a brain will create for a specific word, will offer a better understanding of how and where the brain stores information and even lead to improved treatments for language disorders and learning disabilities.
