Thanks to a new pilot program from the tech startup Rapid Flow Technologies, Steel City now boasts 50 intersections whose stoplights are running artificial intelligence software known as Surtrac that reduces wait times on empty or lightly-traveled roads.

Your commute could get a lot shorter without you even knowing thanks to traffic lights with artificial intelligence brains inside.

Over the past couple years, a startup named Surtrac has been mentally upgrading traffic lights in Pittsburgh with artificial intelligence. These lights collect data on the amount of traffic from cameras and radar signals, and the network of lights coordinates to ensure that all the traffic passes through intersections as fast as possible.

Uber’s self-driving truck company just shipped 50,000 cans of Budweiser

In the early morning hours of October 20th, an 18-wheeler tractor trailer pulled into Colorado Springs, Colorado, bearing 50,000 frosty cans of Budweiser beer. Normally, this would not be a noteworthy occurrence, but this truck was driving itself, marking the first time that commercial cargo was shipped by a self-driving vehicle.

Electric car market is growing 10x faster than its dirty gasoline equivalent

 There will be two million electric cars on the road by the end of 2016.

Despite low oil prices, plug-in electric vehicles (EV) are charging forward worldwide, with more than 2 million expected to be on the roads by the end of 2016, according torecent market figures.

Around 312,000 plug-in electric cars were sold during the first half of 2016, according to analysts at EV Volumes — a nearly 50 percent increase over the first half of 2015.

Comma.ai will make your car semi-autonomous for $24 a month

 

Comma.ai, the self-driving car startup helmed by iPhone hacker George Hotz, has unveiled new details about its first commercial product, the newly named Comma One. According to a report from TechCrunch, the company claims this $999 after-market kit will allow buyers to give their cars semi-autonomous abilities on a par with Tesla’s Autopilot. The physical product will be shipping before the end of the year, says Comma.ai, and will require a $24 monthly subscription fee for access to Comma.ai’s software, as well as certain in-car features like electronic power steering. The aim, said Hotz when we spoke to him earlier this year, is to provide “ghost riding for the masses.”

Electric Dragster Sets Land Speed Record: 341 Mph

 

This Monday out on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, an electric vehicle broke the land speed record for EVs with a two-way average speed of 341 mph. The vehicle, called the Venturi Buckeye Bullet-3, or VBB-3, was developed and built by a team of engineers from Monaco-based Venturi Automobiles and The Ohio State University. The third iteration of the Buckeye Bullet uses two electric motors that can put out 1,500 horsepower (1,119kW) apiece, powered by eight lithium-ion battery packs.

Mercedes-Benz Vision Van concept sends drones to last-mile delivery

When it comes to making the concept of delivery drones a reality, using vans to handle the brunt of the work is an idea that has some merit. We saw some researchers float the idea a couple of years ago and it now appears Mercedes-Benz also sees some potential in the approach. It has teamed up with drone company Matternet to create a concept vehicle dubbed the Vision Van which would deploy drones from its rooftop to carry packages over the final leg of their journey.
