Masdar Institute researchers create way to prevent misinformation from spreading through social media

Research efforts have shown how to effectively mobilize many people on social media for a common task.

Online crowds like the online community Reddit and some Twitter users were criticized for pillorying an innocent student as a possible terrorist suspect in the Boston Marathon bombing. But some emerging technologies might be able to help knock down false reports and wring the truth from the fog of social media during crises.

One of the most famous people that no one has heard of is Santiago Swallow. His Twitter profile shows a handsome man with high cheekbones and dirty blond, collar-length hair.  Next to his name is one of social media’s most prized possessions, Twitter’s blue “verified account” checkmark. Underneath it are numbers to make many in the online world jealous: Santiago Swallow has tens of thousands of followers.  Swallow sends tweets that are cryptic nuggets of wisdom that unroll like scrolls from digital fortune cookies: “Before you lose weight, find hope,” says one. China’s Twitter censorship measured by computer scientists

Weibo, China’s version of Twitter.

China’s version of Twitter, a microblogging service called Weibo was launched in 2010.  Just like Twitter, users are allowed to post 140 character messages with @username and #hashtags.  140 characters in Chinese contain significantly more information content than in English.

U.S. is the most data hungry country according to Twitter’s Transparency Report

“These growing inquiries can have a serious chilling effect on free expression – and real privacy implications.”

The Government wants more of your data, but copyright holders are getting slightly less active in requesting tweettakedowns. The social/news/media network published its second Twitter Transparency Report today in conjunction with #DataPrivacyDay. Twitter’s goal is to be open about revealing how many government requests it gets for user information and DMCA copyright takedowns. Its first Transparency Report was published seven months ago, in July.

75% of world leaders are now on Twitter

Digital Policy Council (DPC) has a new survey that shows 75 percent of the world’s heads of state have a presence on Twitter.  A total of 164 countries were evaluated by the DPC study, and it found this year that 123 of them have a head of state that is on Twitter, either with a personal handle or an official government one. That’s up significantly from 2011, when 69 out of the 164 countries had a Twitter presence.
