 Scientists think they might have finally cracked the cure for baldness, and in a fairly unusual way.

Westworld-style sex with robots: When will it happen – and is it really a good idea?

 

Would you have sex with a robot? An impromptu poll of colleagues and friends drew answers ranging from “yes, but only if it was a fully sentient, consenting robot” to “yes, but only if it wasn’t a sentient robot” to “yes, if I could program it and specify exactly what I wanted…no unexpected exploratory penetration, please”. (We’ve paraphrased that last one a little.)

Three-parent baby technique produces world’s first baby

 

The world’s first three-parent baby has been born.

Scientists revealed the birth of a baby boy, now five months old, usingDNA from three parents.

Fertility experts hailed the breakthrough as “great news and a huge deal” for the future of reproduction.

But they expressed concern that it was only achieved because US scientists crossed the border to Mexico to take advantage of lax regulation.

Electric Dragster Sets Land Speed Record: 341 Mph

 

This Monday out on the Bonneville Salt Flats of Utah, an electric vehicle broke the land speed record for EVs with a two-way average speed of 341 mph. The vehicle, called the Venturi Buckeye Bullet-3, or VBB-3, was developed and built by a team of engineers from Monaco-based Venturi Automobiles and The Ohio State University. The third iteration of the Buckeye Bullet uses two electric motors that can put out 1,500 horsepower (1,119kW) apiece, powered by eight lithium-ion battery packs.

Plastic Surgeons Can Now 3D Print Your Future Nose Job

Whether it’s rhinoplasty or breast augmentation, the general timeline of a cosmetic surgery consultation is relatively consistent: a patient walks in with an idea—often equipped with pictures—and a plastic surgeon outlines what they can do.

Historically, doctors have evolved from sketching proposed changes to embracing two-dimensional imaging on computers to incorporating 3D imaging. Now, some practices are adopting 3D printed models to offer patients a sort of blueprint that they can physically hold and touch with their own hands, and make the $13.5 billion cosmetic procedure industry even more accessible.

Donesurfing: A new sport takes flight

 A brand new sport has been created specifically due to new technology: Dronesurfing.

A professional cinematographic company called Freefly used a drone, the Freefly Alta 8, on a day with minimal waves to help pull their boarder across the water. While the drone does have a 20-pound maximum cargo limit, it is able to pull a person across the water (after getting a running start).

Wall-Crawling Robots Could Weave A Room For You

Last May, researchers at ICD Stuttgart revealed the Elytra Filament Pavilion—a vast, carbon fiber structure woven with the industrial arm of a modified Kuka robot. Now, in a thesis project led by Maria Yablonina, the same lab has managed to shrink the scale, from massive industrial-line robots, to a pair of drones that can crawl up your wall to weave smaller structures like tag-teaming spiders spinning silk.

MIT creates a video you can reach out and touch

Strictly speaking, video isn’t an interactive medium, but a new research project from MIT aims to change that: The school’s CSAIL lab has come up with a technique through which viewers can reach out and “touch” objects in videos, manipulating them directly to achieve effects similar to what you’d expect if you were actually touching the object live in the real world.
