Starlink’s website update sheds light on its ambitious plans for a satellite-based mobile phone service. The newly unveiled “Starlink Direct to Cell” page promises “ubiquitous coverage” through “cellphone towers in space,” operating seamlessly over standard LTE networks. According to the current roadmap, text services are slated to begin in 2024, followed by voice and data services in 2025, with IoT (Internet of Things) service also expected in 2025.

Traditionally, satellite phone connectivity has required large, purpose-built hardware, exemplified by the older Iridium network phones. For limited emergency texting, Apple introduced a connectivity paradigm that necessitated being within a connectivity window, holding up a phone, and following a signal-targeting app. Starlink aims to revolutionize this by enabling full-fledged space connectivity on regular smartphone hardware.

Each October, the Nobel Prizes celebrate remarkable scientific achievements, some of which have their origins in unconventional places. In the case of George de Hevesy, who received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1943 for his groundbreaking work on radioactive tracers, that unconventional place was a boarding house cafeteria in Manchester, U.K., in 1911.

George de Hevesy had a hunch that the boarding house cafeteria staff was reusing leftovers from previous meals, as the daily soup seemed to contain the same ingredients as the day before. To test his theory, he used a small amount of radioactive material in his leftover meat. A few days later, armed with an electroscope, he measured the radioactivity in the prepared food. When he showed the results to his landlady, who was unwittingly serving recycled food, she exclaimed, “this is magic.” In reality, it was the inception of the first successful radioactive tracer experiment.

Their study revolved around the creation of organic molecules tailored to specifically target receptors that are excessively expressed on the membranes of aging cells. These molecules harnessed the heightened levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) found in aging cells, thereby promoting the formation of disulfide bonds and generating oligomers that bind together.
