Researchers grow heart tissue on spinach leaves

Researchers face a fundamental challenge as they seek to scale up human tissue regeneration from small lab samples to full-size tissues, bones, even whole organs to implant in people to treat disease or traumatic injuries: how to establish a vascular system that delivers blood deep into the developing tissue.

Current bioengineering techniques, including 3-D printing, can’t fabricate the branching network of blood vessels down to the capillary scale that are required to deliver the oxygen, nutrients and essential molecules required for proper tissue growth. To solve this problem, a multidisciplinary research team at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Arkansas State University-Jonesboro have successfully turned to plants. They report their initial findings in the paper “Crossing kingdoms: Using decelluralized plants as perfusable tissue engineering scaffolds” published online in advance of the May 2017 issue of the journal Biomaterials.

‘Organic’ water claims in Australia are misleading

The bottled water industry in Australia has finally gone too far.  Seven makers were forced to drop claims that their product “organic” while another chose to remove their brand from sale.  The manufacturers got rid of their spin under threat of enforcement action from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, which is cracking down on misleading “credence” claims.

Doubt cast on advantages of organic produce and meat

Researchers say organic foods are no more nutritious and no less likely to be contaminated.

Are organic fruits and vegetables more nutritious than conventional fruits and vegetables?  Maybe — or maybe not.

Scientists at Stanford University have weighed in on the “maybe not” side of the debate after an extensive examination of four decades of research comparing organic and conventional foods.

Scientists produce biofuel from recycled newspapers

Tulane University has applied for a patent for a method to produce the biofuel butanol from organic material.

Scientists have found one way that old-fashioned newspaper beats the internet. Tulane University scientists have discovered a novel bacterial strain, dubbed “TU-103,” that can use paper to produce butanol, a biofuel that can serve as a substitute for gasoline. They are currently experimenting with old editions of the Times Picayune, New Orleans’ venerable daily newspaper, with great success.

Prenatal Exposure to Pesticides Leads to Diminished IQ’s in Children

The study found some of the risks that pesticides were already known to pose to children, including ADHD and learning difficulties.

It was reported this week by the Environmental Working Group that three studies published simultaneously all came to the same eye-opening conclusion.  The conclusion was prenatal exposure to organophosphate pesticides leads to diminished IQs in children between the ages of 6 and 9.

Milk from organic cattle that eat a fresh grass diet is consistently better for your health, a new study claims. Researchers have found that organic milk generally contained less saturated fat and more good fatty acids than milk produced at intensive commercial dairy farms.
